Why the US is no longer the indispensable nation …

On 25 May 2024, President Biden gave a speech to new graduates at West Point to prepare them for war. It was a delusional speech in which Biden attempted to assert the right of the US to control the world under the guise of meaningless platitudes such as the US is the “indispensable nation”, “the world’s only superpower”,”and “the leading democracy in the world”. All the evidence of US security, defence and foreign policy over the past 32 years shows these claims are false. Biden fails to recognize the reality of a changing world – a world that has moved on since 1994. US hegemony is declining. We now live in a multipolar world when the emphasis is on international democratization. The US has inflicted terrible damage to the world, especially over the past three decades due to the Neocons.

On numerous occasions President Ranil Wickremesinghe has said he was elected president to get Sri Lanka out of its economic morass and will do his utmost to fulfill that obligation. This has led to much speculation regarding the president’s intentions with regard to conducting presidential elections prior to achieving economic success. The truth of the president’s utterances with regard to his commitment to resolving the economic crisis is to be plainly seen in his determination to push ahead with unpopular economic policies. He has been unrelenting in sticking to higher tax rates than the masses of people can afford and to the privatization of state-owned enterprises. Both of these policies are unpopular to the point of jeopardising his bid to be re-elected at the forthcoming presidential election, but the president has stuck by his convictions.

An Abstract: In eighteenth-century, colonial Sri Lanka, the Dutch church kept extensive registers of the local population. These “school thombos” contain individual registration of baptism, marriage, school attendance and death. This article argues that the school thombos reveal moral control over family life by the Dutch East India Company and the Dutch Reformed Church, while offering locals a legal and religious identity to employ in negotiating the Dutch colonial bureaucracy. These rarely studied registers shed new light on Sri Lankan family history and the practices of Dutch colonialism. What do they tell us about conjunctures of locals with colonial religion in eighteenth-century Sri Lanka? The school thombo was an instrument used to register and regulate family life, with specific functions and uses by different actors. This article explores the format, objectives and use of the school thombo. Why was the school thombo created and who were registered in these sources? What were the micro practices of drawing up the school thombo? The article is supported by several case studies that illustrate how the school thombo found its way into family life while demonstrating the value of written identities.
