The Shadows of the Forest – stunning, mysterious and deadly.

Leopards are more feared than seen – a sinister, lethal presence lurking in the undergrowth. They are the undisputed heavyweight champions amongst all terrestrial hunters in Sri Lanka. Killing machines in their purest form and as such, the leopard evokes reverence and dread bestowed to no other animal in the country………………………….

There is a vibrant Portuguese community in Batticaloa (East Sri Lanka) who speak and have preserved the language spoken in Portugal during the mid-sixteenth century. They are also exponents of the Baila. They add colour to the local Batticaloa community. They are also conversant in the English and Tamil Languages. There is a community of Burghers of Portuguese origin in the Jaffna town referred to as “Chinnakade” (small town) Burghers. The Jaffna Burghers do not speak the Portuguese language, only English and Tamil. It is interesting to note that Dutch Burgher families also settled down in Provincial towns in Sri Lanka (Ceylon), namely the Vandendrisen and Ferdinands lineages in Jaffna, the Vanderhoven in Batticaloa, Ephraim in Galle and Solomons in Matara.
