Inspirational former Australian cricketer Alan Davidson passéd away today. A sad sad loss of a absolute Legendary human being, admirable cricket administrator, allround cricketer and friend. He was an Australian cricket selector for many years,President of NSW Cricket for well over 30 years, a Director of the SCG Trust , and the greatest left arm swing bowler produced by Australia. So good was he, that Sir Donald Bradman named him in the Don’s best Australian twelve ever! Over 35 years ago , Alan Davidson got me my SCG membership within a week; a favour l never ever forget.
REST IN PEACE GREAT MAN!
NOTA BENE
One Srinivas Shastri has reminded all aficianados that Davidson was the first man to complete the match double of 100 runs and 10 wickets in a Test match.
EMAIL COMMENT from HSM PIERIS, aka MEVAN PIERIS a Thomian and a Sri Lankan Cricketer of the 1960s & 1970s:, 30 October 2021: …..
“This is indeed a great loss. Alan Davidson was one of my heroes. He was undoubtedly the greatest left arm pace bowler I have seen. He was also a great personality on the cricket field. I was glued to the radio when the famous teams of Frank Worrel and Ritchie Benaud met in arguably the greatest series of Test Matches ever played. ….. May His Soul Rest in Peace” ………Mevan Pieris
A FACEBOOK COMMENT from Hugh Karunanayake (now in Melbourne), 32 October 2021:
“Met him once at Gamini Goonesena’s funeral in 2009 (?) where he delivered the eulogy on Gaminin’s life and achievements. Seemed a very humble but with a very well endowed memory.”
