Michael Roberts Mss stored at Adelaide University

Michael Roberts

The library at Adelaide Univeristy is known as the BARR-SMITH LIBRARY.  The staff in the “Special Collections” within the library over the years have been especially helpful over a long period and were hands-on central in organising the Roberts Oral History Project from the 1980s and subsequently (see https://www.adelaide.edu.au/library/special/mss/roberts/).

But it is by pure chance that I came across a document penned in my hand detailing the stock of manuscripts and photocopied material that I had placed within the Special Collections –maybe because our home is adjacent to a National Park and within a high fire-risk arena.

Let me assure all ye readers that I have been stunned by some of the items that I have collected –some of them original Mss items; with the others being copies. but the main point is that some of these copies reproduce very rare items.  Moreover, I find that the range and type of items placed within the realm of the Barr-Smith are quite astonishing. It remains to be seen whether readers and investigators of the past accept that evaluation. I should add that I will be among the personnel delving into some of the data within this stock; but I do not have long to live…..and this stock is there for posterity.

Underlining BLACK JULY in 1958: Poignant Reflections

The ‘Sinhala Only Bill’ by SWRD was ridiculous. SWRD could hardly speak Sinhala when he returned to Sri Lanka from Oxford. That [the Sinhaal Only campaign] was obviously a political move by SWRD.

Hot Press! Terrorist Attacks on Russian Sites in the Caspian

Observer in a Black Sea Resort Town

On Sunday 23 June, which was the Orthodox holiday of Trinity, a public holiday in Russia, three coordinated attacks took place.

The first was a Ukrainian-US attack on a popular Black Sea resort near Sevastopol in Russia’s Crimea, which killed four, including two children playing on a beach. Over 150 people were wounded. In this Ukrainian-US strike, five ATACMS ballistic missiles–requiring American servicemen to operate them–were fired at a popular beach near Sevastopol. Four missiles were intercepted but the explosion of the cluster warhead in the fifth missile in the air resulted in many civilian casualties.

Attending to casualities yesterday in a Black Sea resort town near Sevastopol after cluster munitions from a US made ATACMS missile exploded above the beach resort.

The Work of Anthropologists from Sri Lanka: Reviewing the World Scenario in 1987

Presenting an academic article published in Contributions to  Indian Sociology , n.s, Vol 21, 1-25 also reproduced subsequently in Sri Lanka in 1989 as No, 10 within the SSC Pamphlet Series marshalled by the late Ana Chittambalam, Willa Wickremasinghe , Hari hulugalle and Michael Roberts

Elizabeth Nissan: “The work of Sri Lankan anthropologists: A bibliographic survey”

Introduction: Although many of the studies included in this essay are concerned with Sri Lanka, this is not a bibliographic essay on the anthropology of that country. It is, instead, a survey of the work of Sri Lankan anthropologists, wherever they may have carried out their research.

Brinkmanship at the Heights! Nuclear War Looming!

LISTEN TO SERBIAN PRESIDENT SPEAKING …. https://x.com/Anatolia_Today/status/1802467510886797508

Aleksandar Vučić believes we are just a few months away from a big #war between #West and #Russia: “We are now approaching a big disaster… Who is ready to lose 1, 2, 5 or 15 million people? I’m not, but that’s a question for other people”

A Reference sent to TPS by “Observer in a Black Sea Town” with the following set of thoughts : “Here, Serbian president Aleksandar Vucic, in an interview with a Swiss channel, shares his view that the world is approaching “a big disaster within 3 to 4 months” as neither Russia nor the US/NATO are prepared to back down.  Each side believes they can win. Each side believes the other side is bluffing. Each side believes that escalation is the only pathway forward.

ITIHAS Launched …. and Spreads Its Wings

Go to …. https://itihas.lk/contact/    … Note that the presentation here is a re-cast selection by The Editor of Thuppahi who has also imposed his colourings on the text

Mission:  What we hope to achieve

Itihas aims to equip Sri Lankan youth with the ability to think critically about their past, present, and future. It specifically aims to debunk mythological understandings of history that afford to particular ethno-religious groups a sense of superiority or authenticity over others. Rather than acting as a gatekeeper of knowledge, Itihas seeks to empower future generations of students, scholars, practitioners, and policymakers to learn about, research, and make informed decisions on divisive issues such as conflict, discrimination and violence in a manner that advances a more inclusive Sri Lanka.

Gross Ignorance displayed by USA’s Parliamentarians

Daya Gamage, whose chosen title runs thus: “US lawmakers ignorance of civilian casualties in Lanka’s war on terrorism”

Declaring that the government of Sri Lanka, while combating ‘Tamil Organizations’ which were fighting for a Tamil Homeland in the North-East, committed genocide against the Tamil people, a resolution was tabled in the US House of Representatives, on May 15, 2024, to coincide with the 15th anniversary of the conclusion of the LTTE’s terrorist war; it states, “Recognizing the hundreds of thousands of lives lost during Sri Lanka’s almost 30-year armed conflict, which ended 15 years ago on May 18, 2009, and ensuring nonrecurrence of past violence, including the Tamil Genocide, by supporting the right to self-determination of Eelam Tamil people and their call for an independence referendum for a lasting peaceful resolution”.

Lankan Military Personnel Mark Their Hard-Won Triumph in the Eelam Wars on Anniversary of the Final Moments

Kumar Kirinde & Co, 18 May 2024

Dear RAFOA Member,  Tomorrow, 18th May marks the 15th anniversary of the end of the armed conflict  between the GOSL and the LTTE. In remembrance of the efforts made by the SL armed forces and sacrifices made by tri-services personnel in bringing this conflict to an end, attached is a one page brief and an article done by two retired SLAF officers based overseas and a copy of an article written by a Sri Lankan defence analyst to an Australian defence journal (shared by a military history enthusiast also based overseas for the benefit of our RAFOA membership).

“Walk Like An Elephant” …. Being Laleen Jayamanne’s Engagement with the “Aragalaya”

Walk Like an Elephant: The Island Essays 2022-2023′
These are 22 essays written by Laleen Jayamanne during the time of the Aragalaya/Struggle/Paroattam in 2022 and in the aftermath. These writings  work at the intersection of art and politics within the context of Sinhala Buddhist Ethno-Nationalism as it affected the Arts and Fine Arts Education policy since 1958. I use theoretical and philosophical ideas from Critical Theory familiar to left intellectuals at least since May ’68 in Paris. It is written for a Lankan Left intelligentsia; but as its for a daily paper I have crafted an accessible prose.

A Lifetime Addressing Nationalist Political Currents & Zealotry

Michael Roberts

As I attend a friend’s funeral every now and then in Adelaide or receive mail conveying sad tidings re good friends and other acquaintances, I am reminded that I will disappear into the dust in due course relatively soon. So be it.

However there has been a lifetime of endeavour in various fields. One range of activity has been in the academic realm investigating socio-political events and processes in the world …. with particular attention directed towards my home-country Sri Lanka’s affairs.
