Hashish, Heroin, Sea Cucumber & Migrants: Sri Lanka Navy’s Seizures Today

A search operation conducted by the Sri Lanka Navy off Sinnaarichchalai, Kalpitiya on Thursday night, led to the apprehension of 02 suspects with about 193kg of dried sea cucumber and several other contraband items which were being smuggled.

Among the recovered items were; about 193kg of dried sea cucumber, 33600 shampoo packets (6ml each), 198 balm vials (50g each), 1 A/C plant and 1 Voltage Stabilizer (230 V). The suspects, contraband items and the dinghy were taken into naval custody and were handed over to the Customs Preventive Office in Katunayake for onward legal action.

The National War Memorial in front of the Parliament complex at Sri Jayewardenepura, Colombo is dedicated to all military personnel killed since World War I and police personal killed due to militancy. An annual ceremony to commemorate the velour and gallantry of War Heroes is held at the site on the Remembrance Day unique to Sri Lanka, which is 20th May. This day in 2009 the country’s civil war which went on for 26 years came to an end.

How The War Memorial in Colombo came into Being

The red poppy which s”ymbolizes the blood of war heroes is from the poppy that grows in Flanders, France, a Remembrance Park for the war dead. It was at 11 a.m. on November 11 (- the 11th month) 1918 that the Armistice was signed, bringing to an end the First World War. The war heroes are remembered on the Sunday closest to November 11th at 11 a.m. with two minutes silence and all life comes to a standstill including electronic channels and vehicular movement. In this article I will give you an account of how Sri Lanka’s Flanders – the Remembrance Park at Mailapitiya, off Kandy, came into being.

HEADLINE:  “The 15-member Sri Lanka Emerging Squad has been announced for the tour of Japan.”

Former Thomian cricketer Dellon Peiris will lead the touring Sri Lankan contingent. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced that as per a request made by the Japan Cricket Association, Sri Lanka Emerging Team will tour Japan during the month of May 2023. The team will leave for Japan on the 8th May.

PROLOGUE: Saying “Goodbye” is never easy. The “Goodbyes” I bid to the Staff at Nilaveli Beach Hotel after a relaxed idyllic holiday following the first leg of my tour was hard. This was where I cut my teeth on life’s road and the ties that bind me to this Hotel were, and remain, very strong. But there was a long road ahead, a road I never travelled before. Travice Ondaatjie, whose late Dad Mr. George Ondaatjie was my Boss when I worked for Nilaveli Beach Hotels Limited drove up to Nilaveli on Friday the 24th and told me that on Sunday the 26th March we would leave for Passekudah, Arugam Bay and travel down the Eastern seaboard right down to the Lahuggala National Park in Amparai to visit the archaeological sites there, and then head for Wellawaya and finally to Colombo.

Dr. Enakshi Sinniah Reaches Young Noble Laureate Heights

Two University of Queensland researchers have been selected to attend the 72nd Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting in Germany in June.

Dr Enakshi Sinniah from the Institute for Molecular Bioscience and Dr David Klyne from the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences will join 635 young scientists from around the world at this year’s event, which will focus on Medicine and Physiology.

Established in 1951, the prestigious event offers a valuable opportunity for early-career researchers to learn from and network with 40 Nobel Laureates and to exchange knowledge and ideas.
