Pandara Vanniyan ‘crowned’ Today

Dinasena Rathugamage presented  a Photo with this caption in The Island, 27 August 2020: “Last Ruler of theVanni Commemorated “

His account runs thus: “Vavuniya Disgrict secetary SM Saman Bandulasena garalnds the Bandara Vaniyan statue opposite the District Secretatariat on Tuesday to mark the 217 commemoration of Kulasekaram Variamuttu Bandara Vanniyan, also known as Vanni Bandara ,who is considered to be the last ruler of the Vanni befor the Birtish conquered the area. As for the folklore Vanni Bandaa led the Vanni people against the British and was killed in action. Later the Vanni people deified him and he is now consideed one of the regional gods. A large number of politicians, intellectuals and state officials were present on the occasion. “

A Pooja for Kandy

Almost exactly eighty years ago a young woman, then in her first appointment as a teacher serving a village school off the township of Mawanella, and her husband, evangelist of the Methodist Church in the same village, rushed their infant son to the General Hospital in Kandy in the desperate hope that he would somehow survive through the bout of high fever and infection diagnosed as diphtheria – a disease with which an infant mortality rate quite close to 100% was associated at that time in ‘Ceylon’. They both maintained vigil at the hospital cot, day and night, throughout the fortnight or so of treatment and their child’s erratic recovery.

The story of the ambassador from the French imperial court who became a naturalized subject in Kandy, producing progeny who were to make their mark on the island’s history, is an adventure told against the backdrop of an Indian Ocean made dark and stormy with colonial battles and a mountain kingdom at its edge. “The Odyssey and Living Legacy of Monsieur de La Nérolle, The French Lieutenant of the Expedition Escadre de Perse to Ceylon in 1672” by Yasmin Rajapakse was launched last month in the presence of former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Eric Levertu, Ambassador of France to Sri Lanka.
