The Real Secret of the South China Sea

Pepe Escobar, courtesy of Defend Democracy Press, 30 July 2016, where the title is China – the next target?”

The South China Sea is and will continue to be the ultimate geopolitical flashpoint of the young 21st century – way ahead of the Middle East or Russia’s western borderlands. No less than the future of Asia – as well as the East-West balance of power – is at stake. To understand the Big Picture, we need to go back to 1890 when Alfred Mahan, then president of the US Naval College, wrote the seminal The Influence of Sea Power Upon History, 1660-1783. Mahan’s central thesis is that the US should go global in search of new markets, and protect these new trade routes through a network of naval bases.

That is the embryo of the US Empire of Bases – which de facto started after the Spanish-American war, over a century ago, when the US graduated to Pacific power status by annexing the Philippines, Hawaii and Guam.

Mind-Blowing Revelations about US-UN Machinations: von Sponeck in Q and A with Silvia Cattori in 2007

For Hans Christof von Sponeck, the former assistant secretary-general of the UN, the United Nations, far from guarding the respect for international law and the consolidation of peace, have themselves become a factor of injustice. Thus, the sanctions imposed on Saddam Hussein’s Iraq caused a human disaster, whereas treaties such as the nuclear non-proliferation treaty are used to ensure the domination of certain powers and to threaten others. It is time to change the system completely.  23 March 2007

Hans-Christof von Sponeck Count Hans-Christof von Sponeck, born in Bremen in 1939, has been working for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for 32 years. Appointed by Kofi Annan in 1998 as United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator for Iraq, with the status of UN Assistant to the Secretary General, Mr. von Sponeck resigned in March 2000 in protest against the sanctions, which had led the Iraqi people to misery and starvation. It is with sorrow and bitterness that he speaks about the sufferings endured by the Iraqis, a people he knew well and learned to love, and he appeals to the political leaders responsible for the catastrophe in a moving interview he gave to Silvia Cattori. American Trojan Horses penetrating Sri Lanka Now?

Michael Roberts

George Soros, founder of Soros Fund Management LLC, takes part in a panel discussion at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank annual fall meeting in Washington, D.C., U.S., on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011. The IMF said it is ready to "strongly support" European nations in their efforts to resolve the region's sovereign debt crisis. George Soros and Prof. Joseph Stiglitz will be visiting Sri Lanka in the next few days for discussions on economic and political paths at the highest levels. Their visits are a consolidation of American ‘patronage’ of the Yahapalanaya government marked by preceding visits from John Kerry and Samantha Power, heavyweights in the USA government. Both Soros and Stiglitz are controversial figures, subject to searing criticism from right-wing currents in USA as well as (2) left-wing intellectuals with grounded insights into the operations of the US government and (3) nationalists in the old colonized countries who are wary of the machinations of those so-called ’international’ agencies’ who espouse R2P interventions in support of human rights in ways that seem to complement USA’s agendas.

The line of protest voiced by those pressing allegation 3 above is presented below in Item B by “Patriot” taken from Lankaweb on 2nd January. It is preceded by Item A, a short MEMO on the run (Blackberry) from the Canadian lawyer-intellectual Christopher Black in response to my query inspired by Item B. Continue reading

Vigneswaran’s Fundamentalism and Present Political Manoeuvres spell Danger for Us Tamils

aa-wigneswaran-www.hirunews.lkVigneswaran–Pic from www.hirunews.lk

It is essential to try to go deep into the actions and politics of the NPC, led by TNA’s breakaway group centred around the Chief Minister, C. Vigneswaran and assess the inherent dangers. Separatist ideology and an attempt to return to the barren politics of the LTTE can be seen in every one of their actions. If this is not identified and exposed, once again the Tamil people will be forced to take the road to disaster and Sri Lanka will be plunged into another civil strife for decades. One such painful experience in our history is too many – we have to mobilize ourselves and act together to prevent its repetition.  Otherwise we will sleepwalk into another disaster like the one we had to endure during the last 30 years. I am not a nationalist but if we have to choose between the nationalism of the TNA and that of the Federal Party, the latter is a tolerable one. Neither is my choice… provided we can collectively work for a truly democratic Sri Lanka where all the different communities can enjoy equal rights, opportunities and privileges, irrespective of their religion, language and ethnicity.   Continue reading

Two Notes with Pertinent Literature for the Sally Debate

Muttukrishna-Saravananthan--e1399314919935A Note From Muttukrishna Sarvananthan, 6 January 2015

I am almost entirely in agreement with Razeen Sally’s article in Wall Street Journal http://www.wsj.com

Unfortunately, I do not have time to respond in detail but the following op-eds of mine written during 2014 AS WELLAS one each by journalist Namini Wijedasa and Prof. Amal Kumarage as well complement Razeen Sally’s analysis of the state of the Sri Lankan economy and polity under the Rajapakse regime.

Between China and India: Sri Lanka playing Russian Roulette?

Sandun Jayawardana, in The Nation, 28 September 2014

CHINA vs INDIA

Chinese President Xi Jinping’s historic visit to Sri Lanka earlier this month was widely seen as heralding a new chapter in bilateral relations between the two nations. During his visit, which was the first to Sri Lanka by a Chinese President in 28 years, Xi pushed for the country’s cooperation on China’s initiative to create a Maritime Silk Road (MSR) for the 21st century. The ambitious project aims to establish a lucrative sea-trade route between China and other countries in the region and beyond.

The initiative was first proposed by President Xi during a speech to the Indonesian Parliament in October, last year. The original proposal called for the establishment of such a route to increase maritime cooperation between China and member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). However, China later expanded the concept to include other countries further south of the region and beyond. As such, it came as no surprise that China touted the proposal to countries such as Sri Lanka and the Maldives to expand the new MSR further. Continue reading

Gamini Samarasinghe’s Gentle Warning to the YES Voters in Scotland

An OPEN LETTER to the Scottish National Party from a Non-Political Scientist

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am an energy scientist having in some ways more information about coming developments which are not directly available in Europe, regarding the state of the world’s future energy supplies. Let me in all humility and responsibility tell you that predictions by your scientists and professors regarding the value of Scotland’s off shore oil supplies may not hold true, once these coming developments (which I cannot reveal due to patent restrictions) will be shown to the world very soon.
