While accurate, these arguments lack originality and have been more sharply detailed by figures like John Mearsheimer, Jeffrey Sachs, and Alastair Crooke. The inevitable decline of US global leadership is well-documented; however, the transition is set to be exceptionally volatile and painful for the world—a direct result of the current agendas of the US and Israeli governments.
I find Penny Wong’s recent claim that Iran is “holding the world hostage” by closing the Strait of Hormuz to be not only a disappointment but devoid of historical context, intellectually dishonest, and patently false. To suggest Iran acted without provocation is to ignore years of “original sin” committed by the US and Israeli governments, particularly under Netanyahu and Trump, which Wong and other Australian leaders have consistently supported. Why is Wong so silent about Trump’s unnecessary war? Why is she silent about the countless assassinations carried out by these regimes? These countries, which Wong and Albanese claim share “like-minded values” with Australia, are assassinating people as casually as if they were drinking a cup of coffee. Assassinations, coffee—to them, it’s all the same.
A few days ago, John Mearsheimer presented a devastating case for Trump, Netanyahu, and their cronies being war criminals. Drawing parallels to the Nuremberg trials, he suggested they should all be hanged. Australian leaders are complicit in this war, even while claiming neutrality; their silence, their refusal to condemn the aggressors, and their repetition of lies about Iran make Australia responsible for the unfolding global crisis.

As Mearsheimer rightly notes, Hegseth’s “Crusader” rhetoric actually applies to the US, not Iran; it is the US “that plots vain things.” Mearsheimer quips:
“Pete Hegseth should have been born back in the 1100s… He could have been a spokesman for Pope Innocent III. He sounds like a crusader. I am not talking about a contemporary crusader, but a crusader from the 1100s.”
The reality is simple: this conflict has been fuelled by lies and an explicit goal to dismantle Iran. When Donald Trump threatened to “obliterate” Iran’s power plants and return the nation to the “Stone Age,” Wong remained silent. Now, she frames Iran’s survival tactics as unprovoked aggression. The deal being forced upon Iran isn’t diplomacy; it is a demand for total surrender.
Penny Wong’s repetition of Iran being the “leading sponsor of terrorism” trope is equally disingenuous. While she cries crocodile tears over the crises in Gaza and Lebanon, she remains tethered to the very governments responsible for the carnage. Statistically, Iran ranks significantly lower on global terrorism scales than the rhetoric suggests. By contrast, the actions of Israel and the United States represent the greatest destabilising forces in the world today.
