The DBU X’mas Celebrations on 21 December As Relief Fundraiser

A Circular Notice From the DBU, 7  December 2025

Dear Members,

In light of the severe flooding that has affected many areas of Sri Lanka and impacted on numerous lives, we have taken time to reflect on whether our planned Christmas Celebration on Sunday, 21st December should proceed as scheduled. We are deeply conscious of the suffering experienced across our nation.

However, after careful consideration, the General Committee has unanimously agreed not to cancel, but rather to convert the evening into a flood relief fundraiser, held in support of the national fundraising effort to aid those affected. Proceeds will be donated to an organization carrying out such relief work.

Cancelling the event now would have unintended negative consequences for many individuals — especially during December, which is their most crucial month for earning a living. Such a loss of income during the season does not only affect them today, but will impact them into the year ahead.:

• The performers — Jerome Speldewinde & FriendsShow B & The Top Hats, and Tanuja.
• The sound, lighting, furniture and other service providers, whose businesses are already under strain

• Our catering supply service and partners for whom this season is vital
• Our own staff, who live locally in DBU accommodation but have families in several of the impacted districts — they would greatly benefit from the additional earnings on this night.

By proceeding with the event as a fundraiser, we are able to both deliver essential financial support to flood relief efforts and protect the livelihoods of many innocent people who would otherwise suffer through no fault of their own.

We therefore warmly invite you to attend and to support this effort through your presence and generosity. This will be a Christmas event with purpose — a night where our community comes together to uplift others in need.

Further details will follow shortly on how proceeds will be directed and how you may contribute additionally should you wish.

Thank you for your understanding, compassion, and continued support of the Union.

Yours faithfully,
The General Committee, The Dutch Burgher Union .
