The end of an epic pioneer voyage:  it began in Silesia, Prussia, for the ‘Old Lutheran’ religious refugees who founded Hahndorf in South Australia in August 1839.

Danish Captain Dirk Hahn brought them on the Zebra from Altona on the North Sea to Adelaide. They set foot on land there at ‘Port Misery’ #OnThisDay 2 January 1839. After he helped them find their new home,in the Adelaide Hils, they named their now much visited village after him.

It is the oldest surviving German settlement in Australia and the original village section is a protected State Heritage Area.
