News Item in THE ISLAND, 27 jUNE 2027 …

The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) has added several uniquely Sri Lankan words to its June 2025 update, OED.com has said.Among the new entries is “asweddumise”, meaning to prepare land for paddy cultivation—a word with roots in Sinhala, long used in Sri Lankan agriculture and land reform discourse. First documented in 1857, it was re-evaluated and finally added after decades of lobbying by local academics.

Mahen’s Life Journey: Leaving the Raging Conflicts in Sri Lanka

Fazli Sameer

In the sun-drenched southern skies of old Ceylon, beneath the coconut palms and temple bells, a young man named Mahen stood at the edge of a decision that would alter his life forever. It was 1969, and at just twenty-one, Mahen was about to walk away from his studies at the University of Colombo, a path laid carefully by his parents, relatives, and the expectations of society. He didn’t do it out of rebellion, nor failure. Rather, he felt the tug of purpose in another direction: the world of corporate business and finance.

His uncle, a senior officer at the Bank of Ceylon, had mentioned an opening at a branch in Borella. “There’s more to learn behind a counter than behind a blackboard,” his uncle had said with a knowing smile. Mahen, who had always been neat, quick with numbers, and calm under pressure, found himself drawn to the order and promise of the banking world.

Looming Problems for Sri Lanka

Old Soldier … responding to Thuppahi Editor’s Request for THOUGHTS on the Impact of the Hot War in the Middle East

Topic: Is WW 3 closer than you think?
What has a marine disaster got to do with the fallout of nuclear debris on Sri Lanka and Maldives. We have been unable to get compensation and develop a mitigatory force to protect our territorial sea and the coastline for over 4 years now in the tenure of two governments. Where is the UN and other nations who talk about climate change and marine pollution? What support have we got from them? The world order has changed and bucketloads of talking will not help if we do not get our act together. Sri Lanka needs to be self reliant.

Horrendous Lifeworld in Gaza Today

Manel Fonseka, writing from Sri Lanka

As Living Space in Gaza Shrinks, The Remaining Pockets Endure Hellish Conditions
‘They moved the garbage piles and set up tents between them’: Nearly two million people are crammed into less than 18 percent of Gaza, as Israel’s expanding no-go zones fuel disease outbreaks, overcrowding, and growing hardship – especially for women and girls.

Cliffhanger Cricket at Headingley in UK

Errol the Fernando in Melbourne, writing to his alter ego, Gavin Assauw, 24 June 2025

Dear Gavin,
This is exactly what Ben Stokes had in mind when he won the toss and inserted. He wanted a fourth innings chase on Day 4 or Day 5. Obviously, Stokes expects to have a successful chase because he has had some amazing success over the years. He certainly will not be playing for a draw. It is simply win or lose and this gives India a very good chance of winning. Only a total fool would attempt to predict the result. The main point is that the winner is the actual GAME of CRICKET. This is why Cricket is unquestionably the GREATEST game   –   incomparably greater than football, golf, soccer. tennis, rugby or anything else.   None of those keeps us riveted for FIVE whole days. There is simply no comparison.

Turbulence at Headingley

A Tongue in Cheek NOTE from Errol Fernando to Gavin Assauw,  June 2025

Dear Gavin,
While the rest of the world is talking and acting on nuclear bombs, missiles, mass destruction, Gaza, Israel, Iran and many other places, please forgive me for writing about the least important matter in the world – a contest between a mere bat and a red ball. With apologies may I say that as we begin Day Four the situation is exactly how captain Stokes wants it. Jaiswal is out and so he needs to dismiss just THREE batsmen – captain Gill, Rahul and Pant and then ask EIGHT batsmen to chase a target – Stokes himself, Duckett, Crawley, Pope, Root, Brook, Smith and Woakes. India has only four batsmen and one bowler even though he is by far the greatest bowler in the world. They also need fielders who can catch. I hope they do better in the next Test.
