The Thriving Undersea World around Shipwrecks around Sri Lanka

A recent news Item in The Island prompted me to ‘explore’ the web for items displaying the rich history of shipwrecks around our island with incidenal thoughts about the intrepid cluster of undersea explorers in the mid 20th century, namely: Mike Wilson, Arthur C. Clarke, Rodney Jonklaas, Hugh Stewart, Dinkalage et al.

THAT 624-Run Partnership That Remains A Record

A Note From S. SKANDAKUMAR in the hills of Uva, March 2025

Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene scored  624 runs in partnership for the third wicket for Sri Lanka vs South Africa at the SSC grounds in 2006. This remains a world record for any wicket. Harry Solomons in Sydney, being Harry, marked this great feat by sending a pictorial MOMENTO to a former ambassador in Australia who was also a cricketer and a cricket commentator, namely, Somachandra Skandakumar.

Ross Bilton in The Australian Weekend Magazine, 22-23 February 2025, “showcasing two decades of amazing photography”

A tiger shark circling the carcass of a young humpback whale. A red-eyed tree frog plagued by mosquitoes. A Maori octopus selecting its prey from a huge aggregation of spider crabs. Nihal Fernando: Cameraman Extraordinary

Michael Roberts

During my years at Peradeniya University campus in the late 1950s, one of my bosom pals was LJM Cooray aka Mark Cooray. Our engagements in the Student Christian Movement deepened our association and was further strengthened by his marriage to another SCM-er viz. Noreen – a gentle and inspiring soul. Let me stress that Mark’s home in Colpetty was one of the several spots where I could stay overnight during my undergraduate days.

Machu Picchu: A Historic Inca Site Beyond Imagination

Troy Bramston, in The WEEKEND Australian, 18-19 2025, where the chosen title is Unlocking the mysteries of Machu Picchu in Peru”

A view of Machu Picchu in Peru, which stands 2,430 m above sea-level, created by the Inca Empire. Picture: Troy Bramston.

As you climb the ancient trail of the Incas and catch glimpses of Machu Picchu, situated on a mountaintop in the Sacred Valley of Peru, you begin to prepare yourself for what lies ahead as it slowly comes into full view. You increase the pace on the winding path even as the air density decreases and each step sucks the air out of you as you reach almost 2500m above sea-level. But suddenly, there it is: a place almost beyond imagination.

Seeking “PEOPLE INBETWEEN” in Adelaide

PEOPLE INBETWEEN was a collaborative project involving Percy Colin-Thome, Ismeth Raheem and Michael Roberts in the year 1989. Its foundation was that of the CA Lorenz Mss in a cabinet held by the Royal asiatic Society. The RAS was housed then in a section of the Colombo Racecourse. Percy, alas, is no more with us; but his labours were central to the deployment of the documents; while a sabbatical yar of research in 1988/89 enabled me to work on the project alongiside my other tasks.  The term “inbetween” in the title was crafted in non-grammatical manner from my aesthetic preference.

The Sarvodaya printing establishment helped us in material ways in producing the book in a situation of political and economic difficulty within the island.
