The Royal-Thomian: A Message from Revd Marc Billimoria

A Message in Facebook from the Retd Warden, Fr. Marc Billimoria. early March 2026

It is one year this week since I was part of organizing this spectacular sporting event – the blue ribbon and quintessential Big Match, the Battle of the Blues, the Royal-Thomian Cricket encounter, for the last time as Warden. The run up to the event and its aftermath, (particularly in the face of a loss) are equally or even more stressful for those in the ‘hot seats’ at both Mount Lavinia and Reid Avenue, the Warden and the Principal, due to so many ‘behind-the-scenes goings-on’ as well as the expectations of so many different individuals and groups, such as the unfair and unrealistic expectation that amateur schoolboy cricketers will play like professionals or the undue pressure on them to win at any or all cost.

India Outlast Australia in ODI Semi-Final

Karthik Krishnaswamy, in ESPNcricinfo, March 2025

Dubai will host the final of the Champions Trophy, and India will be in it, after proving their edge over a weakened Australia side in an absorbing first semi-final. Their win wasn’t achieved without a fight, however, and Australia may yet look back on several moments that could have moved the contest in other, tantalising directions.

In the end, India’s quality and experience made the telling difference, and the member of their line-up who most embodies those words was a central figure. Virat Kohli had made one of his trademark chase-controlling hundreds earlier in the tournament, against Pakistan, and seemed set for another here, only for an uncharacteristic attempt at a big hit to cut his innings short at 84. By then, however, he had passed 8000 runs in ODI chases, and whittled this one down to a more-than-manageable 40 off 44 balls.

The Invincible Thomian Cricket XI of 1965

Somasundaram Skandakumar

That Thomian team in 1965 was like Bradman’s Invincibles. They fielded a superbly balanced side that smashed all records as Barney Reid led their bowling with uncanny control and very late and sharp inswing, while Sarath Seneviratne their skipper and Anura Tennakoon spearheaded the batting.
At Tea on the second day following on with two hours to go we were eight down and the Thomians were celebrating. Wadugodapitiya was joined by our dear Lakshman Thalayasingham and they defended stoutly as the minutes ticked by until a few minutes before close Thalay was out stumped playing on his back foot🤗😂He never lived that down🤗
The last pair held firm and we escaped with an honourable draw.

Afghanistan Down England in Thrilling Win

Andrew Miller in ESPNcricinfo, 27 February 2025: “Zadran 177, Omarzai five-wicket haul knock England out” ………. Joe Root’s 120 off 111 balls – his first ODI ton since 2019 – in vain for England.

Afghanistan 325 for 7 (Zadran 177, Omarzai 41, Archer 3-64) beat England 317 (Root 120, Omarzai 5-58) by eight runs

The politicians hadn’t wanted this game to go ahead, but who could have wished to deny the scenes of raw euphoria that unfolded in Lahore, as Afghanistan completed the double they had set in motion at the 2023 World Cup and dumped England out of the Champions Trophy in a wildly undulating, anxious scramble for glory.

Rex Clementine in The Island16 February 2025, where the title reads “Remarkable Turnaround for Sri Lanka’s ODI Team” .… with highlights being impositons by The Editor, Thuppahi

A year ago, Sri Lanka found themselves languishing at eighth in the ODI rankings, a far cry from their glory days when they rewrote the rules of one-day cricket. Fast forward 12 months, and they’ve leapfrogged three places to settle at number five. Their recent emphatic series win over Australia is the latest sign that this team is on an upward trajectory, clawing their way back to where they rightfully belong.

Michael Roberts in An Interpretation of the Scorelines and the ESPN Report from Tristan Lavayette, ………………………… https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/australia-in-sri-lanka-2024-25-1459900/sri-lanka-vs-australia-2nd-odi-1469168/match-report

A shorthanded Australia will enter the Champions Trophy bereft of confidence and desperate for answers after a hefty 2-0 ODI series defeat to Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka’s massive 174-run victory in the second ODI in Colombo was set up by Kusal Mendis and captain Charith Asalanka powering them to 281. Kusal made 101 off 115 balls, and had strong partnerships with Asalanka and Nishan Madushka, before Australia were routed for just 107 in the 25th over.

Sri Lanka Down Aussies in ODI at Colombo, 12-2-2025

Tristan Lavalette in ESPNcricinfo, 12 February 2025 ... where the title reads “Asalanka’s stunning hundred, Theekshana’s four wickets turn tables on Australia”

On a surface that aided pace and spin, Sri Lanka’s captain rescued his side with the bat before the visitors collapsed

Tristan Lavalette

Charith Asalanka scored 127 out of 214

Without Travis Head, Josh Inglis and Glenn Maxwell, Australia’s inexperienced top-order were blown away in their pursuit of 215. Australia made a poor start when Matt Short was out second ball for a duck after being pinned lbw by quick Asitha Fernando.
