Tamils in Ceylon Cricket, 1901-2024

DEAR FRIENDS, A major error by a Sri Lankan lady re Tamil representatives in Ceylon/Sri Lankan cricket in the exchanges in LINKED IN drives me to compose an item in TPS on the Tamil cricketers who played cricket for the island at the highest level in the 20th and 21st centuries.

The Janashakthi Book on cricket sponsored by the Schaffters, which places SS Perera’s wonderful archive of work on the bookshelves, is an example of Sinhala Tamil cooperation that places sources for all manner of information on the island’s rich cricket history within our reach. While I will be scouring this work for data, I reach out here to aficionado seeking data (and photographs) displaying information on Tamils who represented Ceylon/Sri Lanka at the highest level in the years stretching from 1901 to 2024.

The Schaffters: Ceylonese serving Sri Lanka down the Generations

A major error by a Sri Lankan lady re Tamil representatives in Ceylon/Sri Lankan cricket in the exchanges in LINKED IN drives me to compose an item in TPS on the Tamil cricketers who played cricket for the island at the highest level in the 20th and 21st centuries (this is in process and will take time).

The Janashakthi Book on cricket sponsored by the Schaffters, which places SS Perera’s wonderful archive of work on the bookshelves, is an example of Sinhala Tamil cooperation that places  all manner of information on the island’s rich cricket history within our reach. Netherlands stump Sri Lanka in T20 Warm-Up

TrevineRodrigo  in eLanka deploying this title:;  “Netherlands humble cocky Lankans in warm-up boilover”

Sri Lanka made an inauspicious start to their T20 World Cup campaign losing by 21 runs to the Netherlands in the USA in their first warm-up game before the tournament proper.  Obviously thinking too far ahead by being focussed on the real tournament, Sri Lanka let their guard down by resting several key players and paid the price as the underdogs turned tables on them.

Sumathi Awards (Sinhala: සුමති සම්මාන) is an award bestowed to distinguished individuals involved with Sri Lanka’s television screen, each year by the Sumathi Group of Company, Sri Lanka in recognition of the contributions made by them to the Sri Lankan teledrama industry and television programs. The Sumathi ceremony is one of the most popular television program events in Sri Lanka. The awards were first introduced in 1995.

An Appraisal: How the Aussie Cricketers Fared at the IPL?

A handful of Australia’s players have dominated the IPL while others have had lean tournaments.

Top performers

Travis Head has been Australia’s stand-out performer at the IPL this season even with his first-ball duck in Sunrisers Hyderabad’s final regular season game against Punjab Kings. Head was the third-highest runscorer in the regular season with 533 runs from 12 innings including a century and four fifties at a staggering strike-rate of 201.13. His opening partner, Abhishek Sharma, was the only other player to pass 350 runs while striking at over 200. According to ESPNcricinfo’s Smart Stats, Head had the second-highest total batting impact across the tournament behind Virat Kohli.

I came across this unusual photograph in loose-leaf form amidst my files and lata pata in my study.  David Sansoni in Sydney has rendered it more presentable, while Mevan Pieris has provided me with critical information on this unusual club and pointed me to pertinent data in that classic work by SS Perera reproduced as The Janashakthi Book of Sri Lanka Cricket (Colombo 1999).
