The Ceylon Journal of Historical and Social Studies was published twice a year by The Ceylon Historical and Social Studies Publications Board which was constituted in 1958.
THE CEYLON HISTORICAL AND SOCIAL STUDIES PUBLICATIONS BOARD was composed of the following personnel: S. ARASARATNAM, B.A. (Ceylon), Ph.D. (Lond.) …; R. K. W. GOONESEKERE, LL.B. (Ceylon), B.C.L. (Oxford) …; H. A. I. GOONETILEKE, B.A., Dip. Lib. (Lond.), Dip. Lib. (Madras), F.L.A. …; H. A. DE S. GUNASEKERA, B.A. (Ceylon), M.Sc. Econ., Ph.D. (London)..; L. S. PERERA, B.A., Ph.D. (Ceylon) …; RALPH PIERIS, B.A. (Ceylon), B.Sc. Econ., Ph.D. (Lond.) Editor….; K. M. DE SILVA, B.A. (Ceylon), Ph.D. (Lond.), Managing Editor….; A. J. WILSON, B.A. (Ceylon), Ph.D. (Lond.)
The Journal was published as an University publication and produced 10 volumes (20 issues) 1958-1967.Initially Ralph Pieris and S. Arasaratnam were editors and H. A. I Goonetilleke was managing editor. However, Arasaratnam left Sri Lanka in 1961 and in 1962, K. M. de Silva took over as managing editor. In time, the publication of issues was delayed and the 1967 volume of the first series came out only in 1970.
My understanding is that the Second Series of The Ceylon Journal of Historical and Social Studies commenced in 1971 and was totally managed and edited by K. M. de Silva, although in theory, the old board, many of whom had moved away, remained there on paper. As far as I know, the Second Series went on till 1980 after which publication of CJHSS ceased.
By that time, there were many other journals available for publications by scholars in history and social sciences. Two decades of work by Kingsley de Silva in keeping CJHSS alive has not been adequately recognized.

The Ceylon Journal of Historical and Social Studies was a ‘university ‘ publication only in the sense that it was published by a group of academics from the University at Peradeniya. As far as I am aware it was not funded by the University at Peradeniya, unlike journals such as Modern Ceylon Studies and the Ceylon Journal of the Humanities. I regret causing the misunderstanding by stating that the CJHSS was a University publication. I should have merely stated that it was an academic publication.
