Presidential Election Outcome in Sri Lanka: Reactions From Individual Lankan Friends

A: From An Ex-Army Officer in USA, 26 Sept 2024

Quite an achievement for AKD! In the 2019 presidential election, the JVP vote plus ‘also ran’ others was less than 6%. SEE ……………………………………………… https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_Sri_Lankan_presidential_election

I think it is a good result for the nation. The people were sick and tired of the corrupt and inept political elites and the crony capitalists. The portly ‘monkeys’ that occupied the palaces and travelled around in gilded coaches will be kicked out!

The activist younger demographic group who are mostly educated and into social media and their links to the SL Diaspora helped to swing the result. The urban middle class also supported the JVP.

The result is also good because there was no race and religion politics and the win was not overwhelming. There is a strong opposition.

Now we will have to wait for the outcome of the parliamentary elections. The entrenched political operatives in the various electorates will sabotage AKD’s efforts to ‘clean house’!

B: A Seasoned Voice from the Hill-Country, 26 September 2024

From 3% in 2019 to 42% speaks the Peoples voice, particularly when pitted against two formidable candidates! …. a man coming with clean hands (an exceptional if not unique virtue in a country rendered bankrupt by corruption). Let him be given the time, space and the support he deserves to deliver…….. An excellent choice of PM too.

Most peaceful disciplined elections…..

AKD’s acknowledgement of his past wrongdoings during the insurgency period is a significant step. His subsequent transformation, evident in his public speeches and campaign, underscores the credibility of his current actions. He has already opened the can of worms, and Namal, Basil, and many others, including Buddhist priests, have left the country.

I noticed that the political culture has changed fast, and people are content. The fun will start after the General Elections in November.

During one of his visits to China, Henry Kissinger is supposed to have asked the Chinese Premier Zhou En Lai whether the French Revolution had any impact on the Chinese Revolution? Zhou En Lai had thought for a while and replied “It is too early to tell”

It is still too early to judge what impact AKD will have on Sri Lanka politics.
