China and USA Battle for Popularity on World Stage

Theodore K

An ISEAS report  — Iseas is a semi-government think tank in Singapore — reveals in a recent survey that in Southeast Asia, China is more popular than the US. The report in pdf format can be downloaded at
https://www.iseas.edu.sg/centres/asean-studies-centre/state-of-southeast-asia-survey/the-state-of-southeast-asia-2024-survey-report/

One question asked: if ASEAN were to choose sides, which side should they take, the US or China? The majority said “China”, with 75% of Malaysians saying China, and 73% of Indonesians prefering China.  Brunei 70% chose China; Laos 70% chose China; Thailand 52% chose China.
The only countries that chose the US over China were,
The Philippines: 83% chose US, 16% China, and Vietnam:  79% chose the US and 21% China.
But this was not enough to offset the majority of all Southeast Asian countries.
The report led Al Jazeera to publish
In an attempt to counter these findings,  the US propaganda radio station “Radio Free Asia” published a piece with the title”No, China is not more popular than the US” in which the author David Hutt skewed the findings of the report to favour the US, based on flawed analysis, and misrepresenting the report.
Ever Since Iseas began their annual survey, the trend towards China over the US has increased year by year, so it is not a sudden shift, but a gradual one,  slow but sure.
The Southeast Asian position is very different to public perceptions in Australia which goes to show how much the media and government is able to manipulate public thinking on China.
Meanwhile, another survey reveals China has overtaken the US in Africa as being more popular.  In every African country,  China ranks higher than the US ………………………………………………………………………….
China 58%
US 56%
Germany 54%
Russia 42%
