Boiling Point: Arrowheads Aimed at AUSTRALIA DAY

But the issue that’s reaching boiling point today is the Australia Day debate. Australian cricket captain Pat Cummins has added his voice to calls to change the date from January 26: “My personal opinion is I absolutely love Australia and think it is the best country in the world by a mile. I think we should have an Australia Day but I think we can probably find a more appropriate date to celebrate. Australia Day is meant to be a celebration of everything Australia in our history. I think we could choose a better date.”

Earlier, the head of Cricket Australia was left stumped for words when quizzed about the organisation’s refusal to acknowledge Australia Day at the Brisbane Test.

Chief executive Nick Hockley awkwardly hummed and hawed on radio when questioned about the contradiction in his comments that he wants “everyone to come along to celebrate Australia Day,” [but  then noted] that the phrase Australia Day won’t be uttered at the ground to “be respectful to everyone”.

Pet retailer Petstock (majority-owned by Woolworths) has also forbidden its staff from doing anything to celebrate Australia Day, saying in a memo it was “committed to being an inclusive organisation”.

PS from a Thuppahiyaaa: The debating heat is matched by the over 35 Degree heat in Adelaide this week: so ….. the beach is the Australian way on Australia Day.
