Mamma Mia will be staged at the Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapakse Theatre for an eight day run from 22-30 December as part of their international tour and will be their first ever performance in South Asia.
Mamma Mia is Just Craymer’s ingenious vision of staging the story telling magic of Abba’s timeless songs with an enchanting tale of family and friendship unfolding on a Greek island. Mamma Mia’s appeal is such that it has been seen by over 60 million people in 50 productions in 16 different languages worldwide. When it was first released in 2008 Mamma Mia the movie became the highest grossing live action musical film of all times. A sequel Mamma Mia Here we go again had its global release in July 2018.
From West End to global phenomenon, the London production of Mamma Mia has now been seen by more than 10% of the entire UK population. It is one of only five musicals to have run for more than 10 years both on Broadway and in the West End. With music & lyrics by Benny Andersson & Björn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! is written by Catherine Johnson, directed by Phyllida Lloyd and choreographed by Anthony Van Laast. The production is designed by Mark Thompson, with lighting design by Howard Harrison, sound design by Andrew Bruce & Bobby Aitken, and musical supervision, additional material & arrangements by Martin Koch
Selected members of the Mamma Mia cast were flown to Sri Lanka for the launch event held at the Cinnamon Grand. Excited to be part of the touring cast, Lucy May Barker (Sophie Sheridan) Leisha Mollyneaux (Ali) and Lotte Henshall (Lisa) were bubbling with enthusiasm at being in Sri Lanka and were especially looking forward to returning in December for the shows.
Before joining the cast of Mamma Mia, the trio had been familiar with the music. “I knew the songs from my childhood. Since I can remember my mum and I used to listen to these songs and sing a long to them” said Lucy. For Leisha, Abba music is ingrained in her. “We all know the songs. We grew up with them and these are songs that will live on forever”. “Everyone known the music from little kids to older people. They all know the Abba songs” quipped Lotte.
Keisha attributes the appealing storyline for the success of Mamma Mia. “This is a musical that caters to all ages and of course the songs of Abba have such a universal appeal. Mamma Mia is just one of those shows which everyone just loves. The happiness is infectious”. Lotte added that she often sees five year olds to grown adults dancing during the show.
With songs such as Dancing Girl, Thank you for the music, Take a chance on me and so much more, the show has a feel good vibe which people can connect to added Lucy.
Fun is most definitely the name of the game as the cast and crew unleash a lashings of sheer Abba magic!
