Flood Relief Donations: Pathways for Australians

The Situation Report  issued by the Disaster Management Center today at 7 am Sri Lanka time on the 29th May said that around 471,542 people belonging to 128,586 families were affected in 15 Districts . 164 deaths and 104 missing reported . Further, 75,236 people belonging to 18,652 families were located at 336 safe locations.

As you are aware adverse weather conditions affecting 230, 571 individuals of 56, 529 families in 14 districts of Sri Lanka. As of 1600 hrs of 27 May 2017, 100 deaths have been reported and 91 individuals declared missing. A detailed special situation report as of 1600 hrs of 27 May 2017 is attached.  

The Government of Sri Lanka has sought international assistance in relief and rescue operations, the expatriate Sri Lankan communities/organisations and donors can support immediate relief in numerous means.

In this context, the Government of Sri Lanka wishes to receive cash donations in the form of assistance from Sri Lankan expatriates since it would be economical to purchase most of the urgent relief items in Sri Lanka and provide them to the needy in a faster manner.

Those who wish to make cash donations can be made such donations at the Office of the Consulate General of Sri Lanka at Suite 536, St. Kilda Road Towers, No. 1, Queens Road, Melbourne, 3004 or deposit funds in the bank account of the Consulate General of which details are given below:

When you make a donation please email your details and amount of funds donated to mail@slcgmel.org so that an official receipt of acknowledgement could be issued. Those who wish to despatch relief materials (list of items needed is given in the above attachment) will have to bear freight charges by themselves. Such consignments should be addressed to the following:

Sri Lanka Appeal for Flood Relief Assistance

 Over 100 lives have been lost while 61,000 families have been rendered homeless due to heavy monsoon rains, in Sri Lanka over the past few days, resulting in floods and landslides. The districts of Kegalle, Rathnapura, Kalutara, Gampaha, Matara, Hambantota, Galle, Matale, Colombo, Kandy, Batticaloa, Trincomalee, Vavuniya, Mullaitivu have been the worst affected. The Emergency Response Unit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is coordinating rescue and relief measure in consultation with the Government’s Disaster Management Centre.

 Latest updates on the situation can be accessed at www.dmc.gov.lk.

Sri Lankan expatriate community can assist in bringing relief to the affected people by making a monetary contribution.  

Monetary donations are encouraged, as it is more economical to purchase immediate relief items locally. Please note that the Sri Lanka Government is not in a position to bear the cost of freight for sending relief items.  Donations can be made by cash, cheque or money order in Australia dollars payable to the Sri Lanka High Commission, and an official receipt will be issued.

Dear friends,……………………………….As you are aware, Sri Lanka has been devastated by flooding and landslides due to torrential rain. As per the situation report issued by the Disaster Management Center today at 7 am Sri Lanka time, around 471,542 people belonging to 128,586 families were affected in 15 Districts . 164 deaths and 104 missing reported . Sri Lankans have always got together to help their motherland where ever they lived and it is time again to do the same again. The Sri Lanka High Commission has issued an urgent  appeal for assistance to the Sri Lankan expatriate community (attached). An official receipt will be issued for all contributions made.
