Prussian Lutheran Migration to Australia in the 19th Century

Keith Conlon in Linked In

A momentous exodus of ‘0ld Lutheran’ religious refugees to South Australia began hashtagOTD 8 July 1838. Families from Klemzig in Prussia (now Poland) sailed down the Oder River to Hamburg, their departure point for the new reformist colony of South Australia. The ‘Paradise of Dissent’ offered freedom of religion.

A 1938 memorial for their leader Pastor August Kavel at Langmeil Church in the Barossa Valley credits him as‘The founder of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Australia’.

In-Your-Face: Reflection on Political Confrontation in Sri Lanka in the 1970s

John Rogers to Michael Roberts, date uncertain, maybe circa 2018 … responding to items in this website, maybe circa 2018, which retailed debates in the early 1970s  within Peradeniya University and Lanka in circles associated with  — and against — the activities of the CEYLON STUDIES SEMINAR.

Some lecturers aligned with the United Front government of Mrs Bandaranaike voiced strong protests against some seminars organised by the CSS cabal — including a conference on the “Sinhala-Tamil problem” held in Colombo.

John’s reflections on the challenges and the work of the CSS provide us with stimulating ideas on the character of political contestation in general. His academic background and items pertinent to the CSS will be listed at the end of this item.

Where have all the flowers gone,

Long time passing,

the AUTHOR = Austin Fernando

The President and members of the Richmond 60 Club, the former Principal of Richmond, Mr. E.M.S. Ekanayake, and friends. I consider it a singular honor to have been invited to speak about the late Prof. E.F.C. Ludowyk. I was not a student, colleague, or acquaintance of his. Palliyaguruge reaches A Century in ODI Umpiring

Rex Clementine in The Sunday Island, July 2025

Sri Lanka’s Ruchira Palliyaguruge entered an elite club on Saturday when he stood in his 100th One-Day International, joining only Asoka de Silva and Kumar Dharmasena as the island’s umpires to have reached the three-figure mark in the 50-over format.

AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND – MARCH 20: Umpire Ruchira Palliyaguruge of Sri Lanka during the 2022 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup match between New Zealand and England at Eden Park on March 20, 2022 in Auckland, New Zealand. (Photo by Fiona Goodall-ICC/ICC via Getty Images)

The landmark game took place at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Ruchira has risen through the ranks with quiet determination and an unwavering commitment to the game’s highest standards.

A proud product of St. Servatius College in Matara, Ruchira was once a fiery right-arm quick and a solid top-order bat. He shared the new ball — and the opening stand — with none other than Sanath Jayasuriya, who in his school days bowled brisk seam-up before later turning to his trademark left-arm spin.

Maureen Hingert: Ceylonese Beauty Queen Astride the World

Roger Thiedeman in The Sunday Times 6 July 2025, where the title reads “Maureen Hingert and the Howard Hughes connection”

  Howard Hughes

Since the passing in Los Angeles, California on June 29, 2025 of Maureen Neliya Hingert, many have been moved to pay tribute to the Ceylonese woman who, as an 18-year-old, placed third (second runner-up) in the 1955 Miss Universe beauty pageant.

Some of the material written about Maureen over the years, and repeated recently, is mythical; some of it is matter-of-factual. But what most people probably don’t know is that Maureen Hingert’s subsequent career as a movie starlet, brief and unremarkable though it was, came about through her marriage to an influential man on the contemporary Hollywood scene, and his relationship as an advisor and confidant to one of the world’s best-known but reclusive, eccentric, and entrepreneurial billionaires then and now.
