From Brook to Bradman ….. Errol in AWE

Errol Fernando in Melbourne in Email Letters to Pals

ONE: Errol the Fernando to Gavin, 10 October 2024

It is quite unbelievable, Gavin, that a side makes 556 in under 2 days and then spends the next 3 days trying desperately not to LOSE the match!  A side scoring 556 would usually be trying to win by an innings. However, in the Test match at Multan, Pakistan batted first and made 556 and since then they are trying desperately not to LOSE the match!!

England ended day 3 nearly 500 for 3 with Joe Root 175 not out.  Pakistan will spend the next 2 days trying desperately not to lose!

Yes, cricket is indeed a funny game and impossible to predict.

A Medical & Environmental Puzzle associated with Irrigation Projects in Sri Lanka

Edward Upali

I address the issues raised by Dr. Dharmawardene in his essay ……………… https://thuppahis.com/2024/10/09/the-mahaweli-development-project-in-hindsight/#more-85348.

Dr. Dharmawardene says thousands of lives could have been saved if the planners of the Mahaweli Project had provided pipe-borne water supply to the colonists. In hindsight, similar arguments could also be made with respect to the Second World War 2, such as, if some of the European countries were more decisive and united against Germany, millions of lives would have been saved.

Tekwani’s Analysis of “Transnational Security and Postinsurgency Issues” in Sri Lanka

Shyam Tekwani ... taken from …Alas the date of pubn is not indicated clearly… it is probably circa 2010

  • Sri Lanka’s quarter-century civil war may be over, but many of the underlying causes of the war continue to linger.
  • The international network of the defeated Tamil Tigers continues to control immense financial and logistical resources and is supported by the nearly one million Tamil diaspora. Meanwhile, the victorious Rajapaksa government has been slow in implementing its promise of political settlement and integrating the minorities into the political and socioeconomic life of the country. These realities may contribute to the radicalization of a new generation of Tamils, both on the island and in the diaspora in North America, Europe, Australia and Asia. Continue reading

For many Sri Lankan students, history is a boring subject. It’s About Time is a travelling history museum that can change how most of them feel. This unique museum challenges how we as students and adults who once studied history think about the subject. Having visited Kandy, Kurunegala, Badulla, and Batticaloa It’s About Time Travelling History Museum will travel to Mannar from September 4- 11. Entrance to the museum at the Mannar Town Hall will be free for visitors.  The museum will be open from 8 am-5 pm.

Another Sparkling Young Aussie Batsman: Sam Konstas

Michael Roberts

When I highlighted the bright prospects of Ashley Chandrasinghe, a young Victorian opening batsman with Sri Lankan roots,  a few weeks back, little did I know that he would ‘secure’ a pair of ducks for Victoria in a Sheffield Shield match vs NSW where another young prospect named Sam Konstas ‘prospered.’

Prospered? …. And how! Flourishing and shining with two centuries as opening batsman for NSW in this very match.

Hot Press: Windies vs Sri Lanka ….. Lining Up

ONE: Sanath Jayasuriya appointed as Coach — Two Year Appointment

Former captain Sanath Jayasuriya has been appointed Sri Lanka’s head coach after a successful period in charge on an interim basis.

The 55-year-old former all-rounder took over in July following the departure of ex-England coach Chris Silverwood. Under Jayasuriya, Sri Lanka won the third Test against England at The Oval and beat New Zealand in two Tests last month.

He has been appointed on a contract until the end of March 2026 – a period taking in the next T20 World Cup which Sri Lanka will co-host with India in early 2026.
