Public statements from EU and US leaders giving their wholehearted support for the invasion indicates the West are behind it. The US has satellite imagery over Russia providing real-time intelligence to Ukrainian forces. Ukraine is getting help.

Facing an urgent and escalating threat of harm to migrant children detained on Diego Garcia, British Foreign Secretary David Lammy requested their relocation to the UK on July 16th, as reported in the Solicitors Journal. Studying the CricInfo ball-by-ball reportage and the eventual surveys by BBB and Rex Clementine, it seems to me that the principal reasons why Sri Lanka lost were because of (A) Suryakumar Yadav’s sagacious captaincy; (B) an Asitha Fernando bokku; (C) the search for sixers by our set batsmen when going for two or fours was a more sensible method; and (D) Charith Asalanka’s first-ball duck –the second in a row. And since I am a devoted Gallilean that last factor is esepeciially galling (pun intended).
But let the scores and two reviews by Rex Clementine and Hemant Brar respectively tell you the story …. while I also direct you to Facebook where, no doubt, Brian Thomas will be posting a caustic set of comments in his familiar style.

The ‘Sinhala Only Bill’ by SWRD was ridiculous. SWRD could hardly speak Sinhala when he returned to Sri Lanka from Oxford. That [the Sinhaal Only campaign] was obviously a political move by SWRD.

The Sri Lankan world of cricket was well served in the past by an accomplished set of batsmen school at Ananda College and the Sinhalese Sports Club who were all, remarkably, opening batsmen. The first of these lads to hit the headlines was Mithra Wettimuny – the second in the brotherly line-up. As Captain of Ananda, [1] he was selected to lead the Ceylon schoolboys in their tour of India in 1969 ……. with guidance from managers A. D. Karunananda and Angelo Rayer. The squad had an outstanding tour – in fact securing a set of remarkable results (see Ranjan Anandappa’s recounting at https://thuppahis.com/2023/09/09/when-the-ceylon-schoolboys-beat-the-indian-schoolboys-in-their-home-turfs-in-1969/).

Because my sister Estelle’s birthday fell in early May, I visited Sri Lanka from late April 2009 to circa July 2009 when the Sri Lankan armed forces were on the verge of overcoming the LTTE and its Eelam struggle. It so happened that the journalist representing the important Tamilnadu publishers of The Hindu and Frontline was none other than Muralidhar Reddy (in residence near Thurstan Rd). I had met Reddy once at Sanjay Srivastava’s home in Delhi (1995?) and he sought me out with requests for articles to be placed in Frontline.
This initiated a fruitful set of exchanges. It also brought me friendship with another Indian journalist, Kanchan Prasad — whose photographic skills have provided me with some invaluable war ‘tales’ in camera-mode: so that all the four photos of Murali-in-the war-zone are shots snapped by this intrepid lady …. a Lyse Doucet in Asian mould.
