A Thrilling Last Over Victory for South Australia

Andrew McGlashan, in ESPNcricinfo, 10 December 2024

After Agar’s yorker on the last ball was jammed out by Meredith, he thought he hadn’t seized the moment and that it would be a draw.

“It went from how have we managed to lose this to how have we won this?” Approaching 24 hours on from one of the most dramatic Sheffield Shield finishes of all time, South Australia quick bowler Wes Agar was still trying to make sense of the scenes that unfolded in Hobart on Monday evening when No. 11 Riley Meredith was run out off the last ball.
“I just remember seeing the ball getting thrown in and I see Riley running out of the corner of my eye,” Agar told ESPNcricinfo. “I stopped for a minute and thought, ‘what’s happened?’

Errol’s Reflections on India’s Truimph in Perth

An EMAIL Letter from Errol Fernando in Melbourne to his alter ego …. one Fitzroy, 25 November 2024

Dear Fitzroy, I see that Captain Bumrah won Man of the Match for taking 8 wickets.  I would have given him MOM simply for batting first and not inserting. It was a spicy wicket indeed and very tempting to bowl first especially if you are the opening bowler. However, he resisted the temptation and bravely decided to bat first. At 73 for 6 it looked like a stupid decision. However, in the end it brought him victory. If he had inserted, I have no doubt that Australia would have won.

Sri Lankan Cricket Squad for SAF Tests in South Africa

The Squad selected has received approval froma keen watcher in Hiran Hewavisenti of LMD fame, albeit with a passing query about the absence of Kusal Janith Perera. Dhananjaya De Silva remains as Captain — thus marking an ‘era’ when two Richmondites have maintained their hands on the cricket wheel in all formats of the game [so that my old mate Dougie Goonewardena up in Valhalla will be joining Nandi Jasentuliyana (in USA now) in a hai-hoyi …..].

The Selectors have kept faith in the oldies Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal …not unreasonably.  … Michael Roberts

Kudos to the selectors for keeping the faith in both talent and class (although KJP is missing). This is a crack squad – we have the armoury to play on any surface and that is a luxury that we may never have had. A place in next year’s World Test Championship final at Lord’s is up for grabs if we can win at least one of the two tests in South Africa – and we have proved we can

Looks like great blend of experience and youth. I’m sure they will step up to the plate. Sri Lanka seems to have found their lost rhythm.

Eagerly looking forward to the Tests v SA. As stated this is a versatile squad of players. We must win at least one test however we do have the wherewithal to win both matches.

The New Zealand cricket team took a breather, immersing themselves in the natural splendor of Minneriya, where they witnessed the breathtaking ‘Gathering’ — a once-in-a-lifetime spectacle where elephants congregate around the Minneriya Reservoir during the dry season. Kiwis Secure Remarkable Win at Dambulla in Second ODI

Andrew Fidel Fernando

Roughly 20 days after the women’s team won the T20 World Cup, and about a week after the men’s Test team completed a whitewash of India at home, New Zealand’s cricketers continue to do the near-impossible.

On this occasion they defended 108 all out on a tricky – but far from unplayable – Dambulla surface. Lockie Ferguson bowled only two overs before having to leave the field because of a calf injury, but he claimed a hat-trick to rip out Sri Lanka’s top order, as he collected figures of 3 for 7.

After a tremendous series in India where they defeated the home team three times in a  row, a New Zealand second string squad captained by Santner visited Sri Lanka to participate in a 20-over series. In the first match at Dambulla on the 9th November, this side did well to stretch the home side despite assembling only 135 runs on a turning track. Sri Lankan Cricketers fashion a Solid Win in Third ODI at Dambulla

Andrew Fidel Fernando in ESPNcricinfo, …. with highlighting imposed by The Editor Thuppahi

Sri Lanka 166 for 1 (Kusal Mendis 68*, Kusal Perera 55*) beat West Indies 162 for 8 (Powell 37, Motie 32, Theekshana 2-19) by nine wickets

Pathum Nissanka came out of the blocks firing•Getty

Pathum Nissanka sent Sri Lanka’s chase screaming out of the blocks, before Kusal Mendis and Kusal Perera put on a clinical and unbeaten 106-run stand for the second wicket. For a team that had never before beaten West Indies in a T20I series, this chase was almost too effortless to believe. Each of the top three produced sparkling innings, as the hosts galloped to the target of 163 with 12 balls remaining, in front of a packed Poya-day crowd in Dambulla.
