The Cenotaph in Colombo: A British Imperial War Memorial

 In 1923 Ceylon was a different place to the Sri Lanka of today. The land was ruled by the Empire’s masters, ensconced in their ‘Britishers Only’ Colombo Club near Galle Face Green. The Ceylonese had, however, formed their own rival Orient Club located near the racecourse.

If the pipers were playing “Green Hills of Tyrol”, then a group of Sri Lankans would be playing a tune about a Swiss gentleman fighting against the Austrians, composed by an Italian  and played on an instrument proliferated from Scotland but left behind by the Romans as a joke……  using Bagpipes possibly made in Pakistan.

A New York-based artist has put out a call to thousands of Queenslanders to strip down and possibly enter the Brisbane city river for a series of nude images. American photographer Spencer Tunick will be collab­orating with Brisbane Powerhouse to stage a series of nude photographs along Brisbane River later in November.

Danushka Gunathilake as A Conquering Hero & Gentleman

In the 11 months just past, several media reports were busy portraying the events in the trial of Danushka Gunathilaka, the Sri Lankan cricketer charged with sexual assault and violence against a woman in Australia last November, in a very upbeat way. It was a “positive update” they say, and “a win for him” that his strict bail conditions were relaxed, in the lead up to the judge’s decision.

Rita Mannella’s Insights on Her Experiences in Sri Lanka

I recently noticed that the outgoing Italian Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Her Excellency Ms. Rita Giuliano Mannella, had made the following intriguing observation.  “When I return to Sri Lanka’ she said, “I cry twice – once when I arrive and the other time when I leave.“

At first I did not quite understand what she meant (Cosa stai dicendo, Signora?) but when I carefully thought over what she said, I realized that her observation made perfect sense.

The earthquake in the Marrakesh area of Morocco has wrought enormous damage and taken many lives … at least 0000  known cases thus far. The famous Portuguese socccr player, Christiano Ronaldo, happens to be the owner of  huge hotel complex in Marrakesh … ………….. and has immediately made this set of luxury premises available for the  treatment of survivors. Reports thus far indicate that at least 2900 people have died.
