“PERADENIYA DAYS” …. Trevor Lowe’s Discerning Talk in Melbourne

Michael Roberts

An English University couple, Mary and Trevor Lowe, both served Sri Lanka as Lecturers in the Science Faculty at PERADENIYA UNIVERSITY for several years from 1969. My wife and I sustained a warm friendship with both and made several trips to spots in Lanka during their stay. We have also visited them subsequently at their home in Taunton, England.

Mary Lowe, alas, passed away in early 2025.  Trevor recently set out ona toa tour of Malaysia, New Zealand and Australia. When his ship called in at Melbourne docks on Thursday 2nd March my wife and I picked him up for a quick tour of one or two spots (one ruined by rain!) and then treated him to a Sri Lankan dinner at David Cruse’s SPICEY WICKET restaurant.

As arranged, Trevor presented a brief talk on PERADENIYA DAYS. This account was both entertaining and incisive.

I may be biased but ERROL FERNANDO is no fool and has a discerning mind that outdoes the cricketing skills he displayed at Pera in my times and matches his brilliance on the piano and organ. So, ….. let Errol assess Trevor’s talk:

Dear Michael,

Trevor gave us an excellent talk on his ‘Peradeniya Days’. It was deeply moving to hear him, an Englishman, talking about the many Sri Lankans whom he met. He has a profound understanding as well as the deepest love and respect for the Sri Lankan community.

If Trevor had given this talk at the Ceylon Society, he would have received a standing ovation. No doubt about that. It was a privilege to hear this talk.

Errol
