Iraq remained a part of the Ottoman Empire until the end of World War I, after which Mandatory Iraq was established in 1921 and made a colony of the British Empire. It gained independence as the Kingdom of Iraq in 1932. Following a coup d’état, the country became a republic in 1958.
During the period 1980-88 it waged war against Iran: …. Iran-Iraq War. In 1990, it invaded neighbouring Kuwait, but a few months later a U.S.-led coalition force waged war against the Iraqi occupying forces and liberated Kuwait, the Gulf War .
In 2003, a U.S.-led coalition force invaded the country and overthrew the totalitarian (Baath party) regime led by Saddam Hussein. The war subsequently turned into an insurgency and sectarian civil war.
During the period 2013-2017, Iraq was once more in a state of war with the rise and subsequent fall of the Islamic State. At present the post-war conflict in Iraq continues at a lower scale which has been an obstacle to the country’s stability.
