On the 19thAugust 2024 Monday, my Thuppahi aka TPS website had 1587 VIEWS from 1264 Visitors. This is/was an unusual number ….. a very high figure. Of these, 943 Views were directed at the item headed “Tilly’s Beach Hotel at Mount burnt out in 1983.”
The number of visitors is high; but the fact that this item drew the largest number of HITs for the day is not new. The Tilly’s Item has been topping my hit/list chart for quite a few days recently. This is a new phenomenon because the item was placed in TPS way-way back.
So: my question is “Why? ….. “How Come”?

I am a sea person;and also a member of the Mount Lavinia Surf Club from the late 1960s onwards. Though the club premises are maybe a further 1200 yardsnnorth of the southern end of the beach where the Mount Lavinia hotel is perched on the headland, it was quite common for me to walk down to this southern end during recreational activity. So, the striking shell of Tilly’s hotel has been a familiar site in my strolls from 1989 onwards whenever I visit this arena– 1989 being an year when I was on sabbatical research work with my base in Colombo.
I have highlighted the awful killings and asualts that occurred in Colombo and elsewhere in several of my academic articles. I do not know whether the attaack on Tilly’s led to the loss of lives. BUT my amazement at the recent ….. yes recent …… interest in the picture and tale inspires my search for an answer to the question:”WHY so.”
