AN INSIDER’S CORRECTIVE

The southwest monsoon is at full force from May to September so the coastal resorts from Chilaw to Weligama are not amenable to quiet swimming or reef explorations; but there are some good surfing spots — including Mount Lavinia and the  Wellawatte Beach next to the Kinross SC (so please amend the advice above).

This means that the beaches at Nilawelli north  of Trincomalee and those at Passekudah  or Arugam Bay are good for swiming and for  snorkelling wherever there is a eef parallel to the  coast.
