Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s extraordinary journey from rural farmland upbringing to Indian Premier League riches might just be beginning. In October, a 13-year-old from India’s northeast made global headlines when he pummelled Australia’s Under-19s for a 58-ball century in Chennai. In hindsight, the young Aussies might have gotten off lightly.
Six months on and having since turned 14, Vaibhav Suryavanshi smashed an even quicker hundred (this one coming off just 35 balls)against an even better attack(every Gujarat Titans bowler he faced has played Test cricket).
There is some conjecture over whether the Rajasthan Royals prodigy may be older than his reported age; he gave an interview in 2023 suggesting he was to turn 14 that year.
Beyond his qualification for age-group cricket – which the baby-faced teenager might have outgrown anyway – it now hardly seems to matter.
The more pressing question is how far Suryavanshi can take his extraordinary talentsinspired by another free-wheeling left-hander, Brian Lara, and honed on a cement pitch laid by his father, Sanjeev, in the backyard of their home on farmland in Samastipur in eastern India.

An Entry in FACEBOOK by Charitha Senanayake (a former Ceylon cricketer), 26 April 2025:
It would be doing an injustice to a legend if I failed to mention this.
By sheer coincidence, I bumped into Kumar Sangakkara few weeks back in Colombo and during our conversation, he said (being the Director Cricket of his franchise) “Manage, keep an eye on this young guy, he’s capable of picking even Archer on full flow with a new ball in hand @ 150+ and can easily send it out of the park.
“He’s going to be the next sensation.”
I knew Sanga wouldn’t make such a comment lightly or about just anyone. Sure enough, the player proved him right on debut and what happened today is simply a continuation of that promise and belief.
Much respect to Sanga for backing the boy. Wish both, the very best.
Ultimate and exceptional talents.
