“Perhaps because of my own  familial background I have  always been interested in ethnicity and this interest has been deepened by my fields of academic research. Needless to say, Sri Lanka’s subjection to rule by three different  European powers and its interaction  with Indian peoples inserted plenty of ethnic  variety into the  local populace. 

We can smile and jest and even dance the Kaffrinha or a baila in emphasising this variety …. Rather than revealing the depths of human prejudice in the manner of a Nalin Goonewardena [who deployed the epithet “Kaaberi” as a dagger at my throat].

Sri Lanka’s kaaberi lineages are strains to be pleased about. Apart from the musical inspirations, the  sporting capacities displayed in the past by such  personnel as  Susanthika Jayasinghe, Romesh  Kaluwitharana, Sanath Jayasuriya et al may conjecturally and conceivably be traced ….albeit only in part … to genes inserted into the island’s populace by the African troops (and deserters) in the regiments of the three colonial rulers……
