The Siege of Jaffna Fort by the LTTE in 1990

Gamini Goonetilleke, … with a few photographs awaiting insertion later

I had volunteered my services to the Sri Lanka Army and it was my turn of duty at the Palali Base Hospital when the Jaffna Fort came under Tiger attack. Thus I was a witness to a major battle for supremacy in the North. For the State the Jaffna Fort was of symbolic importance to demonstrate its sovereignty over the Jaffna population and as such the Sri Lanka Army was occupying the Jaffna Fort. For the Tigers, dislodging the troops from the Fort was of importance to pave the way for ‘liberation’. Therefore it became an important battle for both sides.

The siege of Jaffna Fort

The Tigers had surrounded not only the Fort but also the Palali Air Base to prevent the mobility of the troops and also to cut off supplies. They positioned anti-aircraft guns in the Fort area. This threatened the helicopter borne supplies to the stranded troops and the battle for the Fort turned out to be fierce and intense.

A Turn-Around! UK slashes Israel at the UN

Fair Dinkum

Golly gosh!  What a turn around! The UK government condemning Israel for killing large numbers of Palestinians sheltering in 17 schools! Why has it taken the UK government two years to wake up to Israel’s goal to wilfully slaughter all Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank?

Heightened Action in Ukraine-Russia War

Observer in a Black Sea Port

The techniques and extent of Ukraine’s push into the regions of Kursk, Bryansk and Belgorod, which borders on to Ukraine shows the West is deeply involved in this invasion of Russia. Public statements from EU and US leaders giving their wholehearted support for the invasion indicates the West are behind it. The US has satellite imagery over Russia providing real-time intelligence to Ukrainian forces. Ukraine is getting help.

John Mearsheimer has provided the world with an insightful analysis on Israel, Netanyahu, and the US Rules Based Order.

Thus inspired …. THEODORE K’s THOUGHTS:  “Netanyahu has no interest in peace. His goal is genocide of the Palestinians, to make Gaza uninhabitable,  to expand Israel into Gaza and the West Bank, as the US cheer him on to the tune of the Rules Based Order – the “Rules Based International Order” Australia supports and keeps ranting on about.

The Flawed Foundations of the West’s War Programme in the Ukraine

“Uatu” — A Nostradamus Today

When war for profit meets war for strategic defense! “Precision beats mass” and “one shot, one kill” vs precision, mass and industrial scale warfare. The U.S. military industrial complex is profit oriented; they manufacture what sells. Russia’s MIC is not; they manufacture what the military says it needs in accord with Russian military doctrine. What they manufacture must work.

Vale: An Appreciation of Malathi De Alwis … Researcher & Writer

Geethika Dharmasinghe, in Colombo Telegraph, 23 January 2021, where the title reads as “Our Malathi”… presented here with emphasis imposed by The Editor, Thuppahi

She was the first woman in Sri Lankan politics after Kumari Jayawardena to build an awareness on the role of woman and of her ‘traditional’ position, uniting academic work and politics. She is an anthropologist, and a feminist activist. Her activism and scholarly interests were in understanding militarization, motherhood, and the role of memories in the context of nationalist histories.

In Honour of a Dinky-Die War Correspondent, Muralidhar Reddy

Michael Roberts

Because my sister Estelle’s birthday fell in early May, I visited Sri Lanka from late April 2009 to circa July 2009 when the Sri Lankan armed forces were on the verge of overcoming the LTTE and its Eelam struggle. It so happened that the journalist representing the important Tamilnadu publishers of The Hindu and Frontline was none other than Muralidhar Reddy (in residence near Thurstan Rd). I had met Reddy once at Sanjay Srivastava’s home in Delhi (1995?) and he sought me out with requests for articles to be placed in Frontline.

This initiated a fruitful set of exchanges. It also brought me friendship with another Indian journalist, Kanchan Prasad — whose photographic skills have provided me with some invaluable war ‘tales’ in camera-mode: so that all the four photos of Murali-in-the war-zone are shots snapped by this intrepid lady …. a Lyse Doucet in Asian mould.

For Muralidhar Reddy: Thoughts on Eelam War IV in late 2009

ONE: Preamble by Michael Roberts

I was in Colombo from mid-April 2009 to early June and observed the local coverage of Eelam War IV at its bitter end. I was invited by Muralidhar Reddy[i] to write articles for Frontline on aspects of the politics surrounding the war. Though Frontline is a magazine produced by The Hindu consortium, I was not a regular follower of that newspaper on web — even though I had once been introduced to its owner and chief executive, N. Ram, way back in time by Chandra Schafter and had also had an extended chat with him in Delhi in 1995.[ii]

Thus, the receipt of a Hindu report on President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s thoughts in mid-2009, expressed in an extended session with him conducted by N. Ram serves up new material from my position. In step with my policy of raising significant episodes in the course of Eelam War IV to public notice,[iii] I  hasten to present this exchange in the public domain.

Hot Press! Terrorist Attacks on Russian Sites in the Caspian

Observer in a Black Sea Resort Town

On Sunday 23 June, which was the Orthodox holiday of Trinity, a public holiday in Russia, three coordinated attacks took place.

The first was a Ukrainian-US attack on a popular Black Sea resort near Sevastopol in Russia’s Crimea, which killed four, including two children playing on a beach. Over 150 people were wounded. In this Ukrainian-US strike, five ATACMS ballistic missiles–requiring American servicemen to operate them–were fired at a popular beach near Sevastopol. Four missiles were intercepted but the explosion of the cluster warhead in the fifth missile in the air resulted in many civilian casualties.

Attending to casualities yesterday in a Black Sea resort town near Sevastopol after cluster munitions from a US made ATACMS missile exploded above the beach resort.

ITIHAS Launched …. and Spreads Its Wings

Go to …. https://itihas.lk/contact/    … Note that the presentation here is a re-cast selection by The Editor of Thuppahi who has also imposed his colourings on the text

Mission:  What we hope to achieve

Itihas aims to equip Sri Lankan youth with the ability to think critically about their past, present, and future. It specifically aims to debunk mythological understandings of history that afford to particular ethno-religious groups a sense of superiority or authenticity over others. Rather than acting as a gatekeeper of knowledge, Itihas seeks to empower future generations of students, scholars, practitioners, and policymakers to learn about, research, and make informed decisions on divisive issues such as conflict, discrimination and violence in a manner that advances a more inclusive Sri Lanka.
