When Sri Lanka was known as Ceylon, cricket was nurtured by many outstanding cricketers and administrators including the three cricketing families, the Gunasekaras, the De Sarams and the Kelaarts. They had a significant impact from the turn of the twentieth century to the 1960s.

Sri Lanka 166 for 1 (Kusal Mendis 68*, Kusal Perera 55*) beat West Indies 162 for 8 (Powell 37, Motie 32, Theekshana 2-19) by nine wickets

Pathum Nissanka sent Sri Lanka’s chase screaming out of the blocks, before Kusal Mendis and Kusal Perera put on a clinical and unbeaten 106-run stand for the second wicket. For a team that had never before beaten West Indies in a T20I series, this chase was almost too effortless to believe. Each of the top three produced sparkling innings, as the hosts galloped to the target of 163 with 12 balls remaining, in front of a packed Poya-day crowd in Dambulla.

ONE: Sanath Jayasuriya appointed as Coach — Two Year Appointment
Former captain Sanath Jayasuriya has been appointed Sri Lanka’s head coach after a successful period in charge on an interim basis.
The 55-year-old former all-rounder took over in July following the departure of ex-England coach Chris Silverwood. Under Jayasuriya, Sri Lanka won the third Test against England at The Oval and beat New Zealand in two Tests last month.
He has been appointed on a contract until the end of March 2026 – a period taking in the next T20 World Cup which Sri Lanka will co-host with India in early 2026.
Nick Brookes, writing at MURALI END where the title runs ”How Kamindu set the world alight”
It’s been quite the year for Kamindu Mendis.
Cast your mind back to January. Kamindu was on the outside looking in – yet to make a mark in any form of international cricket. For years, he’d been ‘the next cab off the rank’, yet that tag is misleading. Kamindu was more like a tuk-tuk driver searching for passengers in the wilderness; waiting for a fare which increasingly looked like it may never arrive.

Representing Sri Lanka in the Over 70s Cricket World Cup being played in the UK, Harry knocked up a great 78 in 134 balls playing against the usual team he represents in Seniors Cricket – Australia. I was fortunate enough to see Harry’s innings in the dead of night via social media. Australia remains the only team that has won all their matches so far.
