Mangala Most Ludicruous …. Anti-Chinese Venom

In a recent article, Former Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera has ctiticised the SriLankan management “for putting the lives of crew members of SriLankan Airlines (UL) at risk by ordering them to bring Chinese nationals from London to Shanghai.” In a twitter message, Samaraweera has also asked, “Were all the passengers tested/quarantined before leaving London?” He further tweeted: “The question is why China did not choose one of their own airlines to carry their citizens home. They have over a dozen international carriers.”

Anti-Chinese Racism flares up in Australia

There have been over 178 attacks on Chinese people and anyone of Asian appearance in the last weeks in Australia which began after the Australian government launched a vicious attack on China, for political reasons. Note that the New South Wales govt has been anti- China for quite a while.

If you follow the Australian media, they simply replicate the government’s discourse on China. The government and the media work together.  So, it is right to blame the government.

When Nimala and I left London on the evening of 15 March 2020, we never thought that on arrival in Colombo, the Government of Sri Lanka would give us a free pleasant holiday in the Vanni. We left in a hurry to beat the ban on travel to Sri Lanka from the UK. When we landed in Colombo at about 6 pm on 16 March, 19 of us who came from London were told by an airport official that we could either go back to London (for which they would provide free tickets) or be compulsorily quarantined. There would be no exceptions. All opted to stay in Sri Lanka.

A Verbal Joust on the Roots of the Pandemic: Fair Dinkum pummels Wei

I was delighted that my commentary titled “WHO trumps and blunts Trump” (9 April) provoked a hostile response from David Wei. I enjoyed reading it. However, his criticisms of me and his counterclaims cannot go by unchallenged and hence this response.

Wei provides no factual evidence to change my views. I stand by my article and criticisms of Trump’s mishandling of this crisis and his weak attack on the WHO. Many of the views I expressed in my commentary are shared by many rationale people around the world, which can be easily verified by searching through many credible open sources.

WHO trumps and blunts Trump

Trump has no evidence whatsoever to launch this bizarre attack the WHO.  So, why did he do it?  As a superpower, the US have always been obsessed with having an enemy or an adversary for domestic political reasons, as Dr Tedros suggests in his response (see below).

Let’s be clear:  When the Cold War ended after the break-up of the Soviet Union, the US continued to regard Russia as No. 1 enemy. Then it became Iran. After Sept 11, it became Iraq and based on US lies submitted to the UN they initiated an illegal war. When the Soviet Union were in Afghanistan, the US sided with Osama bin Laden and the Taliban.  In his wide-ranging autobiographical tale of his numerous engagements in Sri Lanka and for Sri Lanka Michael Lord Naseby has condemned the LTTE for its deployment of so many Tamil civilians as a “human shield” and “bargaining counter” during the last stages of Eelam War IV in 2008/09. Let me, here, endorse the criticism and encompass the Western nations of Norway, USA, Britain and France as well as the Secretariat of the UN under Ban Ki-Moon for becoming de facto partners in this Tiger programme; while noting that several human rights agencies in the West and a few in Sri Lanka became accessories in this high level hostage enterprise.[1]
