Introducing Alan Strathern’s Work to Sri Lankan Aficianados

Alan Strathern’s first major work was Kingship and Conversion in Sixteenth-Century Sri Lanka: Portuguese Imperialism in a Buddhist Land. …. published in 2008 and since then he has extended his reach. Though in far too belated manner, Thuppahi here introduces his work to a Sri Lankan audience …. Begiining with a citation leading to CR De Silva’s review of his book on Sri Lanka….. and ending with his own introduction of self to the world in the Oxford University web site.

  1. EMAIL COMMENT from Dr. Cynthia Vandendriesen in Perth, 30 July 2021: “Thanks a lot for this information on Strathern’s work. Fascinated by the comment: “the global history of religious encounter and conversion, particularly in the early modern period (1500-1800)… the nature of religious change and its relationship with politics across the whole of world history,”

It is broadly the area in which I have worked as well – mostly through my research on the work of Patrick White and also on that of Indian writer R.K. Narayan.

Could you let me have details of C.R’s book on Strathern’s work. (I have also kept in touch with CR, from time to time after our days at Peradeniya).”

Thanks Mike for highlighting the work of a first rate historian to other Sri Lankan scholars
