Fire-Storm Images, II: The Indian Intervention, 1987

Naval rating Wijemuni Rohana de Silva attempts to hammer — deliver guti, so to speak — Premier Rajiv Gandhi for the humiliation imposed on Sri Lanka Through the insertion of an Indian Peace Keeping Force  as the main pillar of the Indo-Lanka Accord.  This incident occurred during the guard of honour on his arrival  to finalize the Accord.  Note that after serving his period of imprisonment for this act WR de Silva contested parliamentary elections under the JVP banner in his home area down south. I have been reliably informed that The cameraman was Sena Vidanagamage — what a camera strike!

Indo-Lanka Accord Press Meeting,  29 July 1987 ... for inside information on the path to this agreement, see caption details on page 94 of Fire and Storm.

Street Protests against the Indo-Lanka Accord in Colombo

Leaders of the Four Principal Militant Groups in the mid-1980s –– all with some Indian connections, albeit in uneasy competition with each other. From left to right: Sri Sabāratnam (TELO), K. Padmanabha (EPRLF), V. Pirapāharan (LTTE) and V. Balakumaran (EROS). This image was taken when RAW, India’s intelligence agency,  had assembled the four rival bodies under one umbrella called the Ëelam National Liberation Front.

WHY WOULD A DEMOCRATIC COUNTRY ALLOW ANY IMPOSITION ON ITSELF. THIS SHOWED THAT THERE WAS NO BACKBONE TO OUR LEADERSHIP. NOW WE CONVENIENTLY AND COMFORTABLY BLAME INDIA.
WE SHOULD BLAME OURSELVES FOR FIRST ELECTING A BACKBONELESS GOVERNMENT, SECOND ALLOWING THIS GOVERNMENT TO CONTINUE.
WE ARE A SPINELESS NATION, UP TO DATE GOVERNMENTS ARE UNABLE TO DECIDE ON ANY MATTER. PASSING THE BUCK IS THE PASTIME OF THIS COUNTRY.
WILL WE EVER HAVE A GOVERNMENT THAT CAN EVER GOVERN ?
THE BOND ISSUE, THE GARBAGE ISSUE, THE SAITAM ISSUE,
THE PROVINCIAL ELECTION ISSUE, THE UMA OYA ISSUE, THE NORRACHOLAI ISSUE, THE SAMPUR ISSUE, THE HARBOURS, THE STADIUMS AND MANY MORE.
WE ARE LOOKING FOR SCAPE GOATS.

NOT A SINGLE POLITICIAN WILL GO BEHIND BARS.
