Sinhalese extremist agitation has gathered momentum in both email chain networks involving diaspora Sinhala Lankans (and just Lankans), internet blogs, Facebook etc … and also in whisper, proclamation and media exchanges within Sri Lanka. Albeit in changed contextual circumstances, there is some similarity with the climate of claim and counter-claim in the al;te 1950s and the 1960s. It is clear that patriots of various currents have NOT learnt the lessons of the past — so plus ca change plus c’cest meme chose. In these circumstances the public suggestion from the National Peace Council is worthy of debate… and its presentation here is followed by some examples of the SINHALE campaign that is being mounted by the ultra-right Sinhalese patriots [who do not seem to be aware that their pressures are just what the good political doctor ordered from the viewpoints of the Global Tamil Forum as well as Tamil extremists in moderate constitutional garments who are active in Sri Lanka. Michael Roberts.
The sudden display of “Sinha le” posters and stickers in public places, private motor vehicles including buses and three wheelers, and on social media, gives the appearance of being part of an organized political campaign that seeks to exploit nationalist emotions. The term “Sinhale” was used during the period of Western colonial invasion that began in the 16th century to represent that part of the country that remained free of colonial rule. However, today it being given the meaning of “Sinhala blood” by being broken into two parts as “Sinha Le” with the second part being depicted in red. While the word “Sinhale” is part of the country’s historical tradition, its current usage through posters, sticker, social media and on properties of ethnic and religious minorities is a form of severe intimidation to them. When these words are spray painted on their properties it constitutes hate speech which is prohibited in international law to which Sri Lanka is signatory.
The National Peace Council is mindful of the aggressive campaign against the ethnic and religious minorities, in particular the Muslims in the period immediately prior to 2015. In some instances it resulted in extreme violence where sections of towns were subjected to arson attacks. This hate campaign was led by Buddhist clergy belonging to the Bodhu Bala Sena (BBS) and supported by a section of the former government, which ensured that they obtained impunity. However, racism and intolerance based on blood ties are not part of the Buddhist ethos. Therefore the motivating force behind the “Sinhale” campaign has to be partisan politics that seeks to use narrow ethnic nationalism to its advantage.
NPC holds that it is the role of the government to maintain peace between individuals, and that this is a key role of the State. The State must act to prevent hate speech as it provokes violence. Society cannot tolerate hate speech on the ground of free speech. Hate speech is speech that offends, threatens, or insults groups, based on race, color, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, disability, or other trait. We may have ideas of hate but cannot express them because they offend other people who are the victims of such speech. We understand the need to tread carefully on the banning of hate speech as it can be used to stymie legitimate political opinion. The Code of Criminal Procedure (Amendment) Bill and the Penal Code (Amendment) Bill which were proposed to ban hate speech were withdrawn, due to public protests as key provisions in them were drawn from the draconian Prevention of Terrorism Act.
NPC emphasizes the need for new legislation as the “Sinhale” campaign demonstrates intolerance and denial of the rights of religious minorities and could potentially lead to violence and disrupt the building of a tolerant and peaceful society, if not nipped in the bud forthwith. There are currently a number of different religious and inter-religious efforts that are attempting to create and promote post-war reconciliation in Sri Lanka. Religious groups could spread the message of peace in effective and sustainable ways. In addition to tackling this problem of hate speech by means of legislation, inter-religious initiatives which aim to bridge ethno-religious divides and establish a discourse of understanding will provide concrete evidence that the national commitment to reconciliation is strong.
EXAMPLE ONE: It is time to restore Sinhale, the historical name of our motherland. Some countires previously were under the colonial rule have already restored to their original names. Rhodesia into Zimbabwe and Burma now Myanmar. It seems our politicians are still unaware that 2500 years great civilization was built by Buddhist Sinhalese in Sinhale.
“SINHALE” Speaks of their motive
EXAMPLE TWO: Article by Gandara John, entitled “Evil Empire Pivoting to Asia Threatens Sri Lanka With a Humpty Dumpty Constitution (Part 3)”
RW and CBK take a page or two from Soros, a billionaire who admittedly betrayed fellow Jews to the Nazis during WW2 and profited by it. Soros who likes playing a controlled opposition was accused by Hungarian PM Viktor Orban of instigating the exodus of refugees to the Continent from the Middle East and beyond. Soros reportedly unleashed ISIS thugs on Europe. “He is perhaps the strongest example of those who support anything that weakens nation states” said Orban in a radio interview
The ‘Tony Blair Faith Foundation’ a dubious money conduit, that also profited from Soros, has been used by Blair to promote the concept of a One World Government, disparage the concept of Westphalian State and boundaries, root for re-colonization of Africa and Asia through globalisation and promote a single global religion. Spelling out a new post-Westphalian doctrine in Chicago in 1999 Blair argued that ‘globalization had made the Westphalian approach anachronistic’.
Besides RW, hovering around the two well heeled Neo Feudalists from the Club of Rome was CBK a member of Club Madrid, a subordinate club, which too is committed to breaking down Westphalian Sovereign States and creating a One World Government with one faith. CBK’s contention of devaluing Buddhism in the Constitution expressed at a seminar organized by ICES and Equitas and funded by Soros’ OSI and that Eugenic organisation ‘John Merck Foundation’ was in line with her Club doctrine and with Blair’s ‘Faith’ organisation. And RW of course is a member of the Mont Pelerin Society a first line think tank of the Club of Rome.
The timing has been uncanny. Two fat cats arrive in the island; two minions, like carrion crow sniff around them and fete them. The country is cash strapped; a well oiled campaign has been kick started to sell a new Constitution that the people consider unnecessary; Dharshan Weerasekera reports on proposed amendments to the Buddhist Temporalities Act designed to create a division within the majority; a ‘Hate Bill’ to suppress media freedom is in the air; a mysterious depositor announces that 1 Billion USD will be deposited in the bank. Is it Soros or is it Karunanayake’s friend Raj Rajaratnam?
And the plot thickens. A senior member of the Mont Pelerin Society, an organisation committed to destroying sovereign States, is expected in the island shortly to advise his underling RW, on the proposed new Constitution; a board member of the Society up to 2014, the Emeritus Professor of Sri Lankan origin specialises in Constitutional law.
What forebodes our beloved country? Can we anticipate Soros’ ISIS thugs in Sri Lanka shortly? Can RW and CBK swearing allegiance to foreign organisations committed to destroying the sovereign State of Sri Lanka honestly and legitimately hold any office in Sri Lanka? Does it not fly in the face of our oath of allegiance to the State that we Sri Lankans have pledged? Can working with foreign organisations committed to breaking up the State of Sri Lanka be interpreted as treacherous? Can these matters be taken up with the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka and would their determinations determine the future of this country?
What is happening in Sri Lanka affects all the Asian States, all the African States, all the Non Aligned States, indeed all the poor States of the world. The Western rich of the world are trying to enslave us all after having captured our land, sowed dissent amongst us and murdered two billion of us; they are working their plan. Do we accept this and stand idly by? Now is the time to act. It is our very survival.
The poor of the world let us get together. Let us organize a world forum of the poor to work out our strategy. There are many not so poor countries in the East and the Eastern Bloc that may help us. Let us take the first step. We could at this world forum also collectively decide what action we countries should take against those who collaborate with the exterminators and against all those organisations working inside our countries with the exterminators.
” In order to protect newborn Tamil Eelam from invasions from Sri Lanka, the US would establish an Army camp in Palali and Air and Navy camps in Trincomalee. Thereafter, it would exploit natural resources of the country and spread dominance over the Indian Ocean acting as the cunning protector of Tamil Eelam against monstrous Sri Lanka”.The ships which transported goods from Eastern to Western States of the USA had to sail around Argentina spending a lot of time and money. Hence, the USA was badly in need of constructing a canal linking the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans.
Although the USA had planned to construct the canal in Nicaragua the narrowest isthmus was available in Panama which was a State of Colombia. However, attempts made by two French companies to build a canal in Panama were futile due to various reasons.
Considering the massive cost involved in constructing a canal in Nicaragua, the US government decided to purchase the incomplete projects of the French company in Panama. Panama was then a State of Colombia. Hence, the US Government had to reach an agreement with Colombia in respect of the land allocated for the canal, in addition to making a payment for the French company for the work done by them. Both governments signed an agreement to lease the land required for the canal on 22 January, 1903.
However, the Senate of Colombia rejected the agreement claiming it is extremely unfavourable to their country. Although the USA was disappointed, it was not discouraged. It formulated an alternative plan. By then, there was a separatist guerilla movement fighting Colombian government with a view to establish a separate State for Panama. The USA openly supported separatists by sending military troops. As a result, Panama unilaterally declared its independence on 3 November 1903. Soon after the declaration, the USA recognized the newborn State. Three days after the declaration, the USA signed with Panama the exact agreement which was rejected by Colombia.
This incident came to my mind when Minister Rajitha Senaratne spoke in the Parliamentary debate on the Geneva Resolution. According to him, we, the opponents of the resolution, have no understanding about the world and international politics. We were of the view that the world is within Sri Lanka. We were in vein of the view that the USA is very much interested in Sri Lanka. In contrast, US leaders did not know even the location of Sri Lanka. The correctness of Minister Rajitha’s statement can be verified only comparing Sri Lanka’s present situation with Colombia in 1903.
Robert Kaplan who is an American writer on foreign relations published a book titled Monsoon which revealed an interesting point about shifting political power from one ocean to another. According to him, the Atlantic Ocean was the power centre 100 years ago because most of the sea traffic took place between the USA and Europe. The USA exported meat and grains such as wheat and corn to Europe and imported industrial products such as vehicles and machinery.
After the UK and France had lost their superpower status, the importance of the Atlantic Ocean faded away. After the Second World War, the USA and USSR replaced the UK and France as world superpowers. These countries were situated in the Pacific Ocean and thereby the Pacific Ocean became the power centre. Since the collapse of the USSR along with the socialist bloc in early 1990s, the USA has been the solitary superpower in the world. In the recent past, two Asian giants, India and China are emerging as global superpowers challenging the monopoly of the USA. After Spain and Portugal enjoyed the superpower status as border sharing nations, this is the first time two neighbours are becoming superpowers. As both nations are in the Indian Ocean, power centre is now shifting towards the Indian Ocean from the Pacific Ocean.
When the Indian Ocean turns into the power centre of the world, Sri Lanka becomes the most important country as it is located in the middle of the Indian Ocean.
If I quote the words used by the US Secretary of State, at a function organized by the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute in last May, “Sri Lanka is in crossroads to Middle East, South Asia, Far East and Africa”. Because of this crucial geographical location, tamed Sri Lanka is crucial for US dominance in the Indian Ocean.
Similarly, English, Dutch and Portuguese rulers in the past captured Sri Lanka understanding this geo-political reality. Thinking in the same line, Lord Mountbatten established his headquarters in Sri Lanka during the Second World War. The location is not the only reason for the US interest in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is very important for the USA for meeting its future energy needs. The most efficient energy source, petroleum will be over within the next 40 years. Hence, gas and nuclear energy will replace petroleum for heating, lighting and motions.
Although Sri Lanka is a small country in terms of its land territory, it is one of the largest when both land and sea territories are summed up. Sri Lanka was able to claim for a huge sea territory because of its isolation in the Indian Ocean. Although Sri Lanka is located above the Equator, there is no country up toAntarctica. Similarly, there is no country up to Malaysia in the Eastward and up to Somalia in the Westward. India, is the only country situated nearby which is in the Northward. As a result, Sri Lanka’s Continental Shelf is twenty times larger than its land territory. Hence, when both land and sea territories are considered together, Sri Lanka is similar to huge Mongolia in size.
Excavation prohibited Continental Shelf is an underwater landmass that belongs to a country. Although foreign ships can sail in the water without permission, extraction of mineral resources is an exclusive right of the country to which the Continental Shelf belongs to.
Mannar Basin and Kaveri Basin of Sri Lanka are rich of petroleum and gas. It has been discovered that Sri Lankan Continental Shelf is rich with Thorium which is a base material for producing nuclear energy. It is very logical because 25 per cent of Thorium deposits in the world are in India. The most of the deposits are in Southern States such as Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh which are in close proximity to Sri Lanka. Hence, If the Middle East is important for the USA now, in the same manner, Sri Lanka will be important in the future.
It is advantageous for the USA to support Tamil separatists in the same manner it was an advantage for them to support Panama separatists some 100 years ago. The USA was able to construct the Panama Canal in return of supporting separation of Panama from Colombia. Similarly, USA will benefit from Sri Lanka’s location and natural resources if it supports Tamil separatists to establish their dreamy Tamil Ealam. If they establish Tamil Eelam carving Northern and Eastern Provinces of Sri Lanka it will possess two third of Sri Lankan shore and thereby a Lion share of the Continental Shelf.
Additionally, the USA will be able to gain the control of militarily important Trincomalee Harbour. USA can then monopolize extracting Gas, Oil and Thorium from Sri Lankan Continental Shelf. In a similar manner, Australia monopolized oil extraction of East Timor after supporting it to separate from Indonesia in the recent past.
Fairytales of the War Crime Court would trigger a dialogue about safety of Tamils in Sri Lanka. It would be concluded in the end of the debate that there would be no alternative to establish a separate State for Tamils since the government forces which are duty bound to protect Tamils have killed them. This kind of diplomatic operation is not new to the international community. Separations of Pakistan from India, Israel from Palestine, East Timor from Indonesia and South Sudan from Sudan are similar occasions where the international community intervened to establish new States. Hence, they would establish Tamil Eelam carving North and East out of Sri Lanka eyeing natural resources it would inherit. On the same basis, Western powers carved out Kuwait from Iraq and Bahrain from Iran with a view to exploit petroleum resources possessed by these countries.
In order to protect newborn Tamil Eelam from invasions from Sri Lanka, the US would establish an Army camp in Palali and Air and Navy camps in Trincomalee. Thereafter, it would exploit natural resources of the country and spread dominance over the Indian Ocean acting as the cunning protector of Tamil Eelam against monstrous Sri Lanka.
